You might have never thought about how lead shot was formed early on. The Shot Tower tells you all about it. And if you are up to it, climb the stairs to the top for some amazing views of the area. Definitely worth a stop.

The Shot Tower provides travellers with an interesting history, and if you are fit enough to climb the steps to the top, you'll enjoy fabulous views. Indoor cafe plus outdoor tables and chairs. However, the day we visited late morning, we decided to have a Devonshire tea, and we couldn't find staff anywhere...we were about to leave, when my husband asked in the gift shop, and they simply sent us downstairs saying disinterestedly "someone should be down there". Staff in the cafe don't seem to have much hospitality training, and we waited for quite a while for the re-heated scones to arrive at our table. We understand that a wait wouldn't be a problem usually if a place is busy....however we were the only couple at the cafe at that stage!

Great information to read before embarking on the steps- it always amazes me that these structures were built so long ago, so quickly and with none of the modern aids! Good view from the top. A good workout climbing the steps!

Quite an interesting attraction. It begins with a short video which explains the history of the shot tower. Then you walk up wooden stairs to the top (at a steady pace takes about 10 mins) where you can walk around and take photos of the views. The 2 staff present were friendly. Gift shop. Cost is $8 per adult and $4 per child.

We visited the shot tower and was amazed at the building effort and the science into making lead pellets for the use in firearms of the day.Another storey of Australian history.Make sure you climb to the top of the tower for that great view.A must see when visiting Tasmania.

I was disappointed to find just the shot tower with a small souvenir shop and café. The fee to walk up the tower is quite pricey - $8 per adult and $4 per child. Also, the surrounding view is not spectacular.

Stretch your legs and walk the little rickety steps to the top of the tower for a spectacular view.If you are afraid of heights then you can hang at the base of the tower and munch on scones with jam and cream - yum!Great history and beautiful scenery in Taroona.

Located on the edge of Hobart, easy to find. Impressive tower, 48 metres high. Circular stairway up the inside with easy steps. Apparently a 97 year old went to the top ok. Great 360 deg views. Value good. Our family of 6 climbed for $20 and the kids got a badge for counting how many steps. Caretaker was friendly. Gift shop at bottom and a DVD intro to watch.

We went to the shot tower in early December, keen to tackle the 318 steps and see the view from the top. Let me just say that this is an amazing structure. From the outside it almost looks a bit impossible - like a giant chimney that shoots straight up. The inside is like a scene from an adventure movie - all wooden steps on scaffolding that snakes around the interior, right to the top. It's not a difficult climb in that the stairs aren't high, although there are an awful lot of them and you do feel it in the legs. But - if you have a problem with heights or if you're claustrophobic, you may find getting to the top a challenge. The view from the top is superb, but even I found it difficult to stand on the outside against the railing a the top - you're so high up and it's a sheer drop. Also a special thanks to the lady and her husband who were on duty that day - really helpful and friendly.

A colleague recommended we visit this site, and luckily as we wouldn't have visited otherwise. We learnt so much about shot making and the man well ahead of his time whose building and engineering legacy has stood the test of time. It wasn't a bad walk up the stairs, and we are not that fit, although under 40! Most of all we were most pleasantly surprised by the managers who made us a fresh Devonshire tea & chai latte that rivalled best in the city and country. Worth spending a bit of time to learn and enjoy the local hospitality. You even get a small momento after the step a thon.

The Shot Tower,just a short drive from Hobart city is a fantastic place to visit and learn a bit more about Tassie's rich history.Once you have climbed the seemingly endless flight of stone steps to the top,you see a truly magnificent view of the surrounding area.Great photo ops.Back on terra firma,look around and ask some questions.We found it an exhilarating experience.

Most people may see it while they do cruise in Hobart. I asked my friend to take me there. The tower is a historical site. The stairs remained the same as they were built.A bit exercise to go up, but it was valuable effort to see the beauty scenery around

We visited the Shot Tower because we had read a bit about it and we weren't disappointed. The history of the place is interesting. We decided to pay to walk to the top which is a bit of a climb but worth it for the views and sense of achievement as we walked around the narrow viewing platform.

It's $8 to go up the shot tower, and I think worth the money. It's a very well maintained structure, you get so good views from the top, and I recommend finishing it off with a delicious Devonshire Tea at the bottom.

Small but interesting and definitely worth a visit. Great view from the top of the tower and great devonshire teas as well.
