So, I almost always do bike tours when I am in a new city, as I really enjoy a more grass roots visit and a chance to exercise. Why I chose this tour company over Soweto Bicycle Tours I can't remember but I regret it. I can't remember the tour guides name, but #1 he was more like a local riding a bike with me then a "tour guide". He asked me where I wanted to go and I said the Towers, the museum, the Hector Pierson monument, etc. I asked him if that could be done in 4 hours and he said "Sure" but here is how it played out... Every monument that we stopped at he said, "There is a tour guide inside and you pay him to tell you about the location" and I thought "Wasn't that what I was paying you for?" Then he took me to a community garden, which I'm in favor of supporting, but basically it was more like "Hello, this is our garden, please donate money" In fact the entire bike ride began to feel that way. The tour guide telling me how poor he is and everywhere we stopped people asking for donations. After about two hours of cycling I asked to stop for refreshments and I thought back to how on every other cycle tour, they provided at least one bottle of water, or asked if you wanted to stop for water. Throughout the ride his bike kept breaking down, so we had to stop repeatedly to try and fix it in the hot sun. After more than 3 1/2 hours riding (and stopping for repairs) he suggested a new route and new sites and I asked "Will we still get back in 4 hours?" and he would not directly answer the question just kept encouraging it and so I finally said "It's very hot and I am hungry, so I would like to go back to the car". He then took me up a steep hill to Winnie Mandela's house. So, I said, again, "This is interesting but can we head back towards the car?" He said "Yes, mama, yes" but then tried to cycle in the opposite direction towards Nelson Mandela's house (which I would have liked to have gone to, if he hadn't taken me to other places I didn't ask to see earlier). I stopped and said "It's been 4 hours and the car is straight ahead, why do you want me to go the other way?" He said "You have to see the Nelson Mandela house" and I said "Okay, but I'll drive there" Then he said "You also have to see the museum" I said "Okay, I'll return the bike and walk into the museum". He seemed very insistent that I visit the last two locations on the "trip" but it was very hot and I was hungry and I didn't want to pay for extra time, over the four hours, so again I said "Yes, but let me turn in my bike first". When I went to turn in my bike he says AGAIN "Go to the museum and the house" Then a boy, who I had met and spoken to that morning and who seemed to be good friends with the tour guide, comes up to me and says "I washed your car for you, mama" and I said "Why did you wash the car, it was clean, I picked it up last night from the car company? And it is a rental." He said, "Oh, I didn't know you rented the car. I thought it was your car." That made me mad as I reminded him that "We spoke this morning, I said I was from the USA, only here for 4 days. You knew it was rental car and it was clean!" I did not pay him, also my car didn't seem any cleaner. Then as I paid the guide, no tip because it was a terrible tour, he gives me a very sad face (an act that apparently has worked in the past) and he yells after me "Mama, you are going the wrong way, the museum is the other way!" It was obvious that he was getting money for taking people to these locations and that he took me to other places to make the tour more than the agreed upon 4 hours so that he could charge me extra. There's a reason there is only one review every few months for this company - they are not professional, their equipment is in terrible shape and the only thing they want from tourists is money.

We had a marvellous day, cycling in Soweto with our kids, having fun, meeting people. The best way to discover Soweto for sure. One of the best day of our fabulous trip in South Africa.

What shall I say? If you have time, you know how to ride a bicycle and you're in the Jo'burg area: just do it! There is no better way to experience Soweto. Concerned about safety? Don't be. Your guide(s) are your insurance, they are local. We never felt unsafe, not for a moment.

Great experience with friendly, hospitable hosts. Bikes were in perfect condition, and the guides gave us a proper look into Soweto life. Will definitely do it again!

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour of Soweto. It was very safe and we loved hearing first hand what life in the township was like. The staff were all wonderfully friendly and keen to accommodate us. Being on a bike was so much better than being stuck behind glass in a bus - I think every visitor to South Africa should cycle through Soweto - it was a highlight of our holiday by far!

This was a wonderful tour, well organized, lot's to see/learn and good pace. It was easy to book online and I also arranged a pick-up/drop-off with them. The 4hour tour was perfect for me, though if you want to go inside the museums you'll have to do the full day tour. The tour starts/ends at Lebo's Soweto Backpackers, it's a really nice hostel, great space in the back with bar, pool table and lounge area...also the staff were super friendly! If you want to see the real Soweto and meet the people who live there, this tour is a must to do!

Did the 4 hour cycle tour with Bonganin (Guide) and it was absolutely perfcect. Great impressions about the history and the life in Soweto. If you hear about Soweto you think about crime and all the bad thinks you may have heart in the TV and radio years ago. But now it's a very interesting place. Still a lot of poor people live there - of course. But it's an important piece of south african history daily live you should never miss if you are around in Johannesburg or Pretoria.

Had a great tour on bikes. After all the negative stories about Soweto we decided against all odds to try it ourselves.Honestly: The 'not safe' stories are noncence. Never ever felt unsafe. Friendly people and fantastic hospitality, even better than in our home country.Great experience and an eye-opener towards black culture in South Africa.

サントン地区は高層ビルもあり、高級車が走っており、白人もよく見かけますし、想像している南アフリカではないのですが、ソウェトは教科書で習った南アフリカの実写版という感じでした。人々は観光客慣れしていて、期待通りの「らしさ」を見せてくれます。私としては、ソウェト以外のタウンシップのほうが、襲われそうな気配も感じながら、アフリカの現実に直面できると感じました。もし、チャレンジ精神がありましたら、他のタウンシップもお勧めします。

Via de mail de boeking gedaan vanuit NL voor een fietstoer door Soweto. Op aanraden van Martien een 2 uurs toer in verband met de jongste, van 11 jaar.We werden door Martien opgehaald van de lodge waar we verbleven en na een autoritje van ca. een half uur kennis gemaakt met Oliver, onze gids voor de toer. We hadden Oliver voor onszelf, want Martien doet alleen kleine groepen. De fietsen zijn niet van oerhollandse kwaliteit, maar voldoen prima. En er was gezorgd voor een tandem voor de jongste. Een prachtige ervaring, waarbij Oliver gelijkertijd komisch was en ook heel alert op de dingen die om ons heen gebeurde. Hij liet ons de diverse verschillende leefstijlen zien en vertelde enorm veel over de gebruiken in de township. We hebben de bekende punten bezocht, Tutu' s en Mandela's huis. Het Hector Pietersen monument en het Hector Pietersen museum. Een lunch gehad bij een restaurant waar we pap met giblets (niertjes en hartjes) gegeten hebben. Meteen aanspraak met de plaatselijke bewoners. Echt heel leuk! We hadden echter meer tijd nodig dan de 2 uur die we geboekt hadden. Uiteindelijk zijn we 4 uur rond geweest en we vonden het prachtig en indrukwekkend. Martien vond dit allemaal geen enkel probleem, heeft ons op ons verzoek bij het apartheidsmuseum afgezet en rekende geen meerprijs. Altijd leuk voor de echte Nederlander..:-)Voor wie naar Johannesburg gaat een absolute aanrader!!

Aan het begin van onze vakantie in Zuid-Afrika hebben we met Cycle in Soweto een fietstocht door de township gemaakt. Daarvoor hadden we al een rondleiding per taxibusje gehad, maar op de fiets is het natuurlijk heel anders. De fietsen waren niet allemaal even goed onderhouden, maar ze volstaan prima voor een paar uurtjes. Er rijdt zowel een gids voorop als achterop, wat wel een veilig gevoel geeft. Dit zorgt er dus ook voor dat de groep altijd bij elkaar blijft. Onderweg stoppen om iets te zien, te vragen of te fotograferen was geen enkel probleem. De tour gaat langs de meeste highlights van Soweto die op fietsafstand liggen. De gidsen weten alles over Soweto en delen dat graag met je. In Vilakazi Street liet een vent zijn enorme honden met een andere hond vechten, wat zorgde voor wat oproer in de straat. Het werd erg druk en de gids vond het niet veilig om lang te blijven, dus helaas hebben we de geboortehuizen van Desmond Tutu en Nelson Mandela maar kort kunnen zien.Al met al een mooie ervaring en zeker een must als je in Johannesburg bent.

Wij hadden slechts één week in Zuid Afrika en zouden alleen een safari doen. Toch hebben we deze tour geboekt en daar hebben we zeker geen spijt van gehad.Om acht uur werden we opgehaald vanaf ons hotel nabij de luchthaven door Martien. We checkten ondertussen uit en de bagage kon gewoon bij Martien in de auto. Onderweg vertelde hij ondertussen vanalles over het leven in Zuid Afrika.Aangekomen in Soweto deden wij de 2 uur durende fietstour. Een korte tour dus. Begeleid door Sheperd en door een andere local waarvan ik even de naam kwijt ben.Verwacht geen gelikte presentatie, het is allemaal wat houtje touwtje achtig maar daardoor eigenlijk hartstikke leuk. Je ziet veel en ondertussen is er ook genoeg afwisseling in de vorm van een Jo'burg biertje, even wat kopen langs de kant van de weg enz.Wij beeindigden de tour bij het oude woonhuis van Mandela. Martien bracht ons naar de luchthaven waar wij onze auto hadden gehuurd. Dezelfde dag nog zijn we vertrokken naar Graskop en kwamen daar ruim voor het donker nog aan.Dus als je haast hebt: toch gewoon doen, een fietstocht van twee uur valt prima in te passen. Overigens: de fietsen zijn van slechte kwaliteit, maar dat mocht bij ons de pret niet drukken.

Als Nederlanders wilden wij Soweto bekijken per fiets. Ons gezin met pubers was diep onder de indruk. Onze gids Sheperd leidde ons door alle leefklassen in Soweto, inclusief de vluchtelingen uit Mozambique. Samen met de plaatselijke bevolking Jo'burg beer gedronken in een Shabeen.Tip: neem snoepjes of koekjes mee om uit te delen aan de kinderen. Zij komen vrolijk naar je toe en willen graag op de foto. Cycle in Soweto sponsort diverse projecten aldaar. Een aanrader voor iedereen!

Wij wilden de 'muziek' tocht doen, maar we hebben geen muziek gehoord of gezien. Toch was het zeer de moeite waard. Het was wel heel zwaar want de fietsen waren krakkemikkig. De eerste honderd meter vloog 3 keer de ketting er af naar die legden de jongens er weer rap op. Het mocht de pret van de vrolijk zwaaiende bevolking niet drukken. Waren zij nou de bezienswaardigheid of waren wij het????Al met al een aanrader voor mensen met stevige kuiten en een goed uithoudingsvermogen.

Конечно этот район уже не такой как был 12 или 10 лет назад он стал более современным и не таким ужасным.... но можно понять как люди еще живут в одной комнатке по 8 человек (правда вода и свет уже есть) но и они сами во многом виноваты ,что вокруг них такое творится....
