Whether you are taking a hike on one of the many trails, paddling down Muddy Creek or learning about science through volunteering. SERC is a great place to check out and explore. Plan to see wildlife and truly experience nature in all the seasons.Keep an eye out for the open house in the spring and/or fall season. The scientists have displays and boat rides usually available. It is great to learn about what is going on around us!

This was my first visit to SERC and so I didn't know what to expect. We went on a weekday morning in late August. After picking up a trail map from the exhibit hall we headed out on the Java Trail. This particular trail has exhibits along the way giving a history of how the land was used over the past 200 plus years as well as on the Piscataway indians that once lived there. We took a diversion from the Java Trail taking the trail that takes you to Hog Island. It was well worth it. This part of the trail appears not to be as heavily hiked as the Java Trail. It was peaceful and provided beautiful views of the marsh and Muddy Creek. I will definitely return, but the next time with bug repellent!

Spring, summer, fall or winter - Check out the Education Center, hike the trails, attend evening lectures, become a volunteer and help with environmental education programs for school children, lead canoe trips, or assist with research. Or bring your own kayak or canoe and launch it in the Rhode River, bird-watch, photograph butterflies! Enjoy and appreciate nature at this off-the-beaten-track gem!

Family friendly science and nature museum. Small but they have activities for young kids. 3000 acres of woods. Some hiking and canoeing possible but you should bring your own canoe.

The Smithsonian Environmental Center is a a part of the Smithsonian Institution (SERC). Its mission is environmental research in in research on linkages of land and water ecosystems in the coastal zone and provides society with knowledge to meet critical environmental challenges. SERC, in addition to its research work is committed to education in its environmental role. SERC is also custodian of 2600 acres of land. A visit to the center offers an educational opportunity in the environment but also the archeological and historic value of the Center's property. SERC is an opportunity not to be missed.

We go here often to spend a day on the water in our kayaks. They ask for a $5 donation to use their launch site and for the most part, the water is boat free and very quiet. We typically launch on the South River which can be a nightmare during the summer so this is a very nice and relaxing break.
