If you like "Masterpiece Mystery" on PBS you will really enjoy this visit. His artwork was so unique to the show. It was fun to be in his home. This was the house he lived in until his death. We enjoyed the few hours in the house and the walk around the grounds.

This is a good example of the Captain's homes. Here in Yarmouthport they have the Captains mile. Worth the trip if your in the area. They also have a few Inn's in the area for your stay.

This museum was once his house so it's a double delight to see Edward's work and personal items displayed in his own home. Even if you're not familiar with his work (& you might realize you are after you see it), visit & enjoy! The staff is wonderful & the exhibits change each year. Admission is reasonable & there is a great gift shop. The first Saturday in August is "Children's Day" - admission is free & there are lots of fun activities for the kids plus free refreshments & games! Ted was a true original & it's wonderful to get to see his work up close & hear stories about him. There is no better way to spend an afternoon! You won't be disappointed!

Great fun & well worth the visit to celebrate a 'different' ilk of a genius. I live up the road and finally stopped by to experience this marvelously talented man & his whimsicality. Sorry I didn't get here sooner but I did manage to enjoy his 'fat' cat before it passed.

This place gets high ratings and I can see why. My daughter is an Edward Gorey fan so I partially went to get her some presents but was really very pleasantly surprised to learn about his life from a very knowledgeable docent and really enjoyed seeing his drawings and hearing about his life. He collected a lot of things and apparently had over 24,000 books in his house when he died. He had some interesting jewelry from many places although he only traveled to the Scotland islands. He was very gifted-amazingly so which makes his life story all the more fascinating. His drawings are detailed and quirky. Even if you are not a fan or knowledgeable about him, you will find it quite interesting to see his drawings and hear about his life. Cost for the museum is $8.00 or $5.00 for seniors and students. There is gift shop with a lot of his books and other items as well.

There are two kinds of people in the world; those who delight in the idiosyncratic and the eccentric and the unique and those who just don't get those things. The former group enjoys the work of Monty Python, Salvador Dali, Edward Gorey, and the like. The latter enjoys white bread and vanilla pudding. The museum is a total, eccentric, Gorey delight, complete with a scavenger hunt for the Gashlycrumb Tinies (strewn about the house in various stages of death and dismemberment). The docent's knowledge was encyclopedic, and she is thoroughly steeped in Goreyana, enjoying every quirky detail. Just go!

The Edward Gorey House in Yarmouth Port, MA deserves its reputation as one of Cape Cod's premier family attractions. The late Mr. Gorey's former home on an historic village green contains fascinating displays of the famed artist's life and work, including a new and different special exhibition each year. Through the end of 2014 there is a display of original artwork from the 28 small books of Gorey's self-published Fantod Press. You can take a guided tour with knowledgeable 'docents,' or walk around on your own from room-to-room seeing Gorey's collections of glass bottles, baskets, cheese graters and much more, interspersed with intricate line drawings and posters from his many books and theatrical presentations. Youngsters love a scavenger hunt for unfortunate victims in the author's popular Gashlycrumb Tinies alphabet book for children and their parents, and a prize awaits anyone finding all 26 characters. A book and gift store offers a myriad of intriguing books and collectibles for Edward Gorey aficionados, of which there seem to be an endless number!

My daughter had not visited since she was a teenager. We had just as much fun this time as 11 or so years ago. The exhibits change, grown women were having a great time with the scavenger hunt, and the atmosphere is wonderful. A must for Gorey fans.

I loved all the displays of his work. If you are an Edward Gorey fan and are in town, it is worth going to see. I loved looking at all his artwork and seeing what kind of life/personality he had. The docent who gave the "tour" was just not really good. He sort of went into the room, said something about the room and then stood around. It was kind of stupid. It's not really worth spending 8 dollars for. But the gift shop is cool. I would just go look at the gift shop and save your money

I have been a fan of Gorey's for decades and was so happy to find that the hosts/tour guides there had a wealth of knowledge to share. There was just so much to this complicated artist and as much as I have read about him, there was still so much to learn. It was great to have that enthusiasm reflected back in conversation. You can get a deeper understanding of Gorey and yet, at the same time, be even more mystified when you see the trappings of his home. It's fascinating. If you aren't familiar with Gorey but grew up loving the Addams Family, this is a must-see. His dark humor will never be emulated, and the staff at the museum welcome each visitor like an old friend.

I have a small collection of original Edward Gorey work. I'm not a super fan like some but I've admired his work for many years. It was great to finally get to his house and the museum lives up to its billing. It's truly an interesting site.If you're not a fan of Gorey, oddball art or a fan of the "unusual" I do think his house may be lost on you and its appeal may baffle. The exhibit that is on view now (September 2014) is based on his private press Fantod books. Not one of those books is remotely normal. The rest of the house contains little signs and in-jokes that relate to the creation is his characters and his overall style. So trying to relate to this as a "museum" would be tough. I left my wife at an Antique gallery down the road while I visited the house otherwise she would have looked at me funny all day after this. There is a guided tour that I stuck with for about half of the time. The tour is very very detailed and the guide seemed excellent. I just wanted to wander around myself and let the mystery of the house remain a mystery.Oh and look for all of the little Gashlycrumb Tinies and their various stages of being killed scattered throughout the house. This is a unique little site that you can enjoy without knowing Gorey... but like I said earlier you really need to get into the oddball spirit. You may even find yourself addicted to the great man's work if you give it a try.

Since we are both artist, my daughter and I planned an afternoon to visit this museum and former residence of the Tony award winning illustrator, Edward Gorey. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and pleasant hour or so going through various rooms adorned with some of the illustrator's eclectic collections and illustrated stories. As it happened the admission was free on the Sunday we visited but donations were accepted. Children would definitely enjoy wondering through this museum house with its many exhibits, drawings and collectibles. Even the bathroom had felt bats placed on the mirror over the sink! Make it a stop on your way through Yarmouth.

As a long-time fan of Edward Gorey, especially the Gashlycrumb Tinies, I was captivated by the quirky memorabilia within the museum. Long after the other members of our small tour had drifted out the door, I was still reading Mr. Gorey's works and gazing upon the last waffle, appropriately shadow boxed and framed, which he had eaten at Jack's Outback restaurant. Weird, but fun! The gift shop was small, but stocked with great books and clothing, as well as other gift items. This was an incredibly entertaining outing!

We had no idea who Edward Gorey was when we went to the exhibit, but once there, like other reviewers, we did recognize his work. The tour was very informative and there were many interesting things to see. His work is a little out there, but that was what made the visit fun.

Loved seeing this home of the Gashlycrumb Tinies author so well presented and appreciated. The complimentary tours that run continuously throughout the house are most interesting. Be sure to have a wander through the outdoor areas near the house as well. A nicely stocked gift shop will very likely have something of interest for you to remember your visit. Do add this to your itinerary while visiting Cape Cod.
