The historic William Flagg Homer house is the home of the Belmont Women's Club. During the summer months the club offer weekend tours of the house that was owned by the uncle of the American artist Winslow Homer. As a young man Winslow Homer spent time at his uncle's home which served as the setting for a number of his paintings and illustrations for Harpers Weekly. It is lovely to see the original woodwork, shutters and window seat that were the background for one of Homer's Civil War illustrations that appeared in Harpers Weekly. Each summer they have a special feature around the work of Winslow Homer. Last year was Croquet Days and focused on croquet paintings Homer did at the house. This summer the focus was on Homer and his Civil War art work. The house itself is lovely with its historic interiors and beautiful views of the Boston skyline from the upper floor. The club members are so nice and welcoming and love to share their club home with visitors. The club has a very relaxing atmosphere, you can sit on the furniture and they serve punch and cookies to those on tour. Throughout the year the club also offers special fund raising events so check their website frequently.
