I love this forest! Great hiking and fishing, and opportunities to see wildlife in their natural habitat abound! Just remember, the animals are WILD and should never be approached, unlike some people do at other national forests or parks where they are more accustomed to people.

Chugach State Park is a recreational wonderland; the park holds some of Alaska’s most accessible camping, hiking and climbing. A lot of animals, such eagles, moose, grizzly bears, wolves and lynx can be spotted. Explorers will find more than 50 glaciers waiting inside the park. Go there

We did a 8.5 mile (roundtrip) overnight backpacking trip from the Power Creek Trailhead to Power Creek Cabin. The hike was moderate. The trail was in pretty good shape in most spots, but it had two precarious segments, one a potential rock slide waiting to happen about a mile in from the trailhead before the switchbacks. The other tricky part of the trail is where it narrows to a ledge about five inches wide on a vertical rock face about twenty feet above a beaver pond. Many beautiful waterfalls can be seen along the route. The trail follows a river for a good portion of its length. There was a ton of bear scat on the first two miles of the trail due to the proliferation of berry bushes along the trail, but we thankfully didn't run-in to any bears. The highlight of the hike was the Power Creek Cabin. Not sure why it has only been booked for a few nights this season. The setting is second to none, and this is one of the few public cabins that you can get to without a pricey boat or plane charter. This was the most enjoyable experience of my Alaska trip.

We drove through this area on our way between Anchorage and Seward, and it is beautiful. We stopped at the Trail River Campground for an afternoon picnic. There are camp sites as well as day-use sites. In the area where the day-use sites are, there are toilets and bear-proof trash cans in the parking area. There are several sites along a lake reached by paths from the parking area, and each has a picnic table and grill. On the weekday afternoon we visited, there was only one other site being used, and we did not even see the people until we were leaving, so the place had a very peaceful and remote feeling.

Wow, if you want to do some salmon fishing, Cordova is your spot. I think of it as fishing spots along the highway, but I guess it is a National Forest, too. Check out the Alaska Fish and Game website to find timing for the salmon runs, then get ready to catch your limit. There are freshwater and saltwater fishing (with separate limits) here, and the Fleming Spit has a release program that makes fishing at high tide highly productive - from shore! This place has a saltwater limit of 6 fish as of this writing.Bears are around. Don't hike in the woods without some form of defense. Bear spray or a big gun are recommended. That said, there are lots of encounters but no injuries. Just be smart. You may also see bald eagles and other wildlife.
