My daughters and I were downtown and decided to go to the museum. Fascinating place. We enjoyed going back in time to see interesting articles that take us back in time. The girls laughed at some of the phones and household utensils and tools. Everyone should go there at least once. We lost all track of time and we left after 2-3 hrs. What a treasure in Opelika,Al.

Trying to kill some time in Opelika I happened upon the East Alabama Museum and stopped in. There is no fee but donations are accepted. The curator was very friendly and we talked for a while. The museum has some interesting pieces from all aspects of civilian and military life. Some are rural and most relate to East Alabama but there are some wartime pieces that are intertwined with the POW Camp Opelika, which I found to be very interesting. There are tools and large pieces of machinery, glass, porcelain, pottery, china, maps, surgical items, kitchen items, Alabama indestructible dolls, childrens' toys. All in all I was surprised at the amount and the quality of what was in the museum. You too would be surprised If you didn't know it had been hiding in Opelika all along. It is a good stop for an hour and you will be pleasantly surprised at what you see inside this museum.

This isn't a fancy museum, but it is definitely a must see if you are in the area. Lots of interesting items of all sorts--agricultural, musical, military, Native American, medical, sports... The museum is free but does accept donations to help keep things going. A must see place in the Opelika historic district.

We just love this local treasure. This museum does NOT charge admission. How often do you come across that, especially in this economy.? They only accept gracious donations. Our young child really enjoys coming here year after year as he grows and develops new intrests. This museum has a section for antique toys and dolls and they are currently expanding their exhibits for a more descriptive engaging experience of Lee County's earlier days. They now have a nice Native American section as well as a wonderfully accurate example of a kitchen of 100 years ago. My husband and I think that this is great for kids because they get to see right in front of them what life was like in the era when their grandparents (or in some cases great-grandparents ;) were kids themselves.Definietly come, get out and get entertained by a leisure stroll around the museum for a really neat blast from the past! The staff is friendly, the place is well maintained, and this is such a nice way to spend some quality family fun time together.
