holmes medical museum

We spent about an hour in the museum and enjoyed it. It was very informative. There is no admission charge.

I have passed by the Holmes Medical museum for years and finally had a chance to visit. It is located on in downtown Foley on the corner of Hwy's 59 and 98. Entrance is free to the museum. Upon entering you are greeted by the curator. There is a sleigh from a century ago and some pictures, guestbook and a short pamphlet to read about the history of the building. The majority of the museum is upstairs in what used to be Baldwin Co's first hospital. There are several rooms to tour and each room offers something different. There is a sterility room, bathrooms, men's and women's wards, surgery, x-ray room, offices and a few others. There are some rather interesting period instruments and machines like cauterizers, ecgs, x-ray machines, various tincture jars and medical instruments of all kinds. Most of the museum is a time capsule and has been well preserved. There is a room of quack items as well with machines that were "not medically efficient" by standards today. These included bloodletting machines, electro shock machines and other gadgets that were produced in a bygone era. All in all the museum is very nice and has a lot to offer. Being free makes it even better.

There was not an entrance fee to this museum. It was interesting to learn a little about the history of healthcare in this former hospital. There were a fair amount of items used during that time but most of them were not labeled. It would be nice to have items marked more clearly. Was somewhat disappointed.

It would have been great to have a tour guide to explain some of the exhibits in this place or at least maybe have them marked so that you knew what you were looking at. We still enjoyed it .... just a little bit eerie,

This was the first 4 bed hospital in Foley and they've kept many of the original items from that time. So interesting to me being a nurse and I can appreciate how far we've come with medical equipment!

This museum is free and full of some interesting items. This museum use to be the hospital. It is full of history including birth certificates of babies who were born here. There are many rooms set up, some of which show x-ray equipment, operating rooms, and a typical room. The equipment used was displayed and some was very odd. There was also a room of quack medical equipment. It is worth the 30 minutes - 1 hour stop.

If you like to see how things were handled medically years ago it's worth going through. It is not very big, you can get through it in half hour. We were in downtown Foley and decided to stop in, it's free.

This is a small town Medical museum. It is worthy of your time on a slow day.....or if you are a doctor or nurse.

What a treasure this little museum is. Not only do you get a glimpse of the dedication of these two physicians, who served this community, but also of the high regard the community had for them. It also makes you appreciate the advances in medical science. Looking at some of the old medicine tins and old instruments helps us baby boomers remember what it was like, when we went to the doctor when we were kids. So glad we stopped at this wonderful little museum, Foley can be proud of this community treasure.

Foley, Alabama is a nice town. A really nice town. And...hidden away around the corner off of the main street is a wonderful little museum...The Holmes Medical Museum...the first hospital in Baldwin County as I understand it. The place is full of old medical devices and whatnot...and viewing them brings about questions as to whether medical procedures and equipment from the past wasn't sometimes as bad or even worse than the maladies being treated. Yet the place is a wonderful little step back in time...and if it only serves as a reminder as to how good we have things today...then it will have served a purpose.It's strange...I recognized some of the implements on display. That dates me. My mother recognized even more of the hardware...which dates her for sure!The museum is free...and if you aren't moved to at least throw a few bucks into the donations box upon leaving...then you weren't paying attention.It's just a wonderful place to visit.

Very interesting gem in the heart of downtown Foley. Have been here for years and did not know this museum existed. Tours are self-guided.

The museum is on the second floor (no elevator) and has a collection of medical equipment in this former, small hospital. The hospital operated from 1936 to 1958. Well worth the time. Free - donations requested.

Found this museum by mistake. It is well displayed. My family and I spent a couple of hours learning and marveling at how far the medical world has come. A nice place to spend some time when you are at the park across the street.

My children and I live in Foley but, have never been to the medical museum until today. I was pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed it. It was neat to see the old medical equiptment and it was also educational. And, it was free! Can't beat that.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the artifacts in the Holmes hospital. The museum is presented as a self-guided tour, so you can take as long as you like looking at the rooms and equipment. As you go into the "Men's Ward" all of the other areas, you can let your imagination put you back in time to think about patients and how they were cared for in the late1800's to mid-1950's.
