We stumbled upon this place. Incredible views and the water was thundering when we were there. Could not believe that this place isn't more prominent as it was absolutely breath taking when we were there.

An awesome place to walk on a boardwalk that leads you to a closer view of the falls on the New River. Great descriptions along the path too. Take a picnic and enjoy. Also, looks like some good fishing holes.

We recently visited Sandstone Falls while camping close by in WV. It was a cold rainy day but the fall colors and falls were still beautiful! The boardwalk was really well kept and made walking easier in the rain. The trail has some nice view points/over looks of the falls and you can also go off the boardwalk and venture out on your own. The signage to the falls really wasn't that good until we got on the same road as the falls. We had to look up the map before finding the location/road.

Though it was a rainy day, we didn't want that to keep us from getting a closer looks at these falls. There is a very nice boardwalk that gives you good views of the "lower" and "upper" falls. The falls are wide, and were very powerful on this day. The road is a little narrow, and winding, leading you to the roadside park and boardwalk. But, you'll find this to be a very pleasant stop, even if it's on a rainy day!

This review reflects conditions at the time of our visit in early October 2014, and might not be applicable at other times of the year or other years. Having said that, we were very disappointed after a long, tedious drive to get there. The falls are advertised as the widest and perhaps the prettiest falls in the state. Not this time. Almost no water flowing.Our drive took us east on I-64, then south on WV20. We drove south on route 20, paralleling the river for about 10 miles on a winding mountain road. Then we crossed the river in Sandstone and drove north on the opposite side of the river. Another 10 miles on a narrow winding road.In our case, not worth the effort. Keep this in mind if you are contemplating a visit here.

I was here in August 2014 when the river was at minimal levels, but still the falls were beautiful. The falls are not high but very long and can be viewed from many angles and up close ... depending on the flow of water of course. You can follow the boardwalk and small bridge to the river for a good view of the falls and again depending on the river flow you can walk out on the flat rocks into the river. If you take the 2 short steps off the boardwalk to the right (and you should) near the end, there is a path that leads you even closer to the falls. We were able to get right on top of the falls and look down and back into the greenery of the river that was exposed. This is a great spot for lunch if you brought one. The ride to the falls may be long by some standards, but still a beautiful ride and well worth the trip. We spent almost 3 hours here, hiking around and enjoying the falls.

It takes a bit of driving to get to Sandstone Falls, but the trip is worth it. While the overlooks along the way to the Falls are worth a stop, the true experience is best had at eye level with the New River and the Falls itself. Powerful yet peaceful at the same time, this place is definitely worth a visit.

My family drove through on a snowy day, but the views were still stunning. The visitor's center employees were kind to my son, who wanted to collect his national park stamps. We didn't very long because of the weather, but it was still a worthwhile visit.

visited the falls for the first time. the river was beautiful. I really think the area could be cleaned up a bit. some of the walkways could be updated and cleaned up as well. I really wish wv state parks would have more money for updates, cleanups, ect....this spot could really be so much more. would go back, it was pretty there. we did see a snake on the boardwalk so I would recommend keeping your kids close.

Its a little off the beaten path...there is an overlook that does the falls NO justice, but does have a bathroom...there is a second overlook to view an eagle mating island but, without binoculars you wont see anything...then there is the falls....a nice boardwalk to allow young ones to run, as you stroll...many spots to view this extensively long line of falls....the first major viewing point makes you feel that pics offer a false advertising but, thats because the grand view is at the end....there is also a small beach area off to the left of the falls,..and if really lucky, there is a train track on the other side that CSX travels

My husband and I visited the Sandstone Falls during our "Journey of Love" started in Orlando, Florida.This is a unique and spectacular place.No photo can show the beauty of this place. It's a wilderness place away from hotels and bustle of the city where you can enjoy the nature. . From the Pipestem State Park take State Route 20 north. This road is very narrow and winding (we don't recommended this route on a rainy day), but with spectacular riverside views and unique opportunity for excellent photos. Take your time (and maps, no cellphone and don't trust your GPS) and be relax, because at the end (belived or not) you can found this spectacular falls. A very, very accessible boardwalk offering fantastic views of the falls and the opportunity to seat and enjoy the sound of the water, the beauty and the quiet. This route also, gave us the opportunity to visit the Bluestone State Park, Bluestone Dam, Sandstone Visitor Center (excellent maps and information) and the Grandview of the New River Gorge.

Don't settle for seeing one distant end of the falls from the boardwalk.At the end of the boardwalk there are a couple steps leading to a small path into the woods... TAKE IT. Cross a very small creek, go around/over some rocks and voila you are now mere feet from the full mist-in-your-face screaming falls. Absolutely stunning. We had "the place" to ourselves.We saw a guy with a large camera coming from the path and decided to see where it went.That decision led to the best part of a 5-day trip at the New.

Sandstone Falls was our favorite New River Area waterfall and worth a visit but it takes a little effort to get to the falls at water level. The best way to access the falls is from I64 taking exit 139 and following WV 20 south about 11 mi (18 k) to Hinton and cross the New River on the WV 20 bridge. Immediately after crossing the bridge, turn north (right) on Rte 26 and follow this road for about 8 mi (13 k), parking for the falls is on the right. About 3 mi (4.9 k) south of I64 on WV 20, there is a pullout on the right that provides a view of the falls from 600 ft (183 m) above and is worth a stop on the way or as an alternative if one does not have the time or interest to go all the way around. Further south on WV 20, there is another pullout worth a stop that overlooks Hinton and a large island in the New River. Most the 19 mi (31 k) drive from I64 to the falls is scenic and although Rte 26 starts out straight, wide and modern, it quickly narrows to about 1.5 lanes wide, and only one lane wide in spots, with many curves. Be sure to take care as the locals who drive this narrow, twisting road every day tend to travel it at high rates of speed. Once at the falls there is free parking but we found it quite limited given the number of visitors. Access to the falls is by a short boardwalk trail past a beaver dam. This is a popular fishing spot and there are also picnic and restroom facilities near the parking lot.

This is a beautiful breath taking thing to see. It's a bit of a climb to get close to the falls so make sure you wear shoes with good tread for the slippery rocks.
