Lovely and very safe beach. Located inside the Point Judith Harbor of Refuge. This allows for much calmer waters with no undertow, and you can enjoy a nice beach walk to Galilee. The beach provides swing sets and playground for kids, picnic tables, pavilion with refreshment stand, bath room and coin operated showers. Plenty of parking ($$) and well trained Life guards. No animals allowed. Beach cleaned daily. Open seasonal 9am to 6 pm. The home of New Years day Penguin Plunge. To us locals we still refer to it as Sand Hill Cove Beach.

The thing that separates this beach from most the other beaches in this area is the total lack of surf. If you have toddlers and want a beach where they won't have to worry about waves this is the one. This also means this is the beach with the most family like atmosphere.

the parking, cost a lota cash, too much. the consecutions stand is highway robbery, the ocean is clean and ice cold!!

This is the beach to go if you have small kids, the waves a small, the there us a full playground inside the beach area to take them when they need to get out of the water to warm up.

This beach is one of nicest I have been to. Nice rolling waves. Great for small children. I noticed the sand here is somewhat finer and with shiny crystals in it. Never saw that before. Being here in September was nice. Less crowded and no fee to park. I understand it can be quite expensive during the season. This seems to be a good beach for shell searching. Nice, slow waves leaves many unbroken shells to find.

We rented a house 2 blocks from the beach so didn't have to pay for parking. Had I paid the $30/day for the beach, my review would not be nearly as high. That said, we went to this beach every day for 7 days. There was a hurricane off the shore which kicked up some waves despite the breakwater that normally keeps the place quiet. The bathrooms were clean, with changing rooms and coin operated hot water showers. Outdoor showers were free but not heated. The snack shack was well supplied. Playground was a good romp for kids who needed a beach break. There was a large dead tuna washed ashore when we arrived at 9AM and by 10, it was hauled away. Talk about taking good care of the beach! They rake it every morning, so there is no sea weed on the beach, but no shells to collect. Walk further down to the private beach for shells. All in all, very happy with the beach. Scarboro and Narragansett Town Beach are good for the teens and couples, but if you have kids, Roger Wheeler is the place to be!

This is the larger state beach on Sand Hill Cove. If you want a nice.long beach walk, Salty Brine state beach is at the other end. Other than the parking fee ($28 for out-of-state,) there is no admission charge. The water is fairly calm here because of the breakwater, which makes it a good family beach. The water is calmer here than at Scarborough and other south-coast ocean beaches in the state. Because it is known to be a family-friendly beach, it can get crowded in season, but this is relative. If you take a walk west toward the Salty Brine Beach, things thin out pretty quickly. The pavilion has pretty clean bathrooms and changing areas, although the staff can have a hard time keeping up toward the end of a busy weekend day. This is a state beach, not a private club. There is a reasonably-priced snack bar, but we generally have only bought sodas here, and brought our own beach sandwiches from a favorite sandwich shop (I don't know Tripadvisor's policy about mentioning specific names.)FYI: with a reservation, you can get a big-tire wheel chair for handicapped people, so people of all abilities can enjoy the beach. So -- there are many RI state beaches, each with its own personality. We like to come here for gentle waves, bathroom facilities, and a nice opportunity for a long beach walk. But frankly, there are often A LOT of little kids around if you stay near the pavilion during major beach days.

This is not a beach you want to come to if you don't have children. There are kids and sand toys everywhere! Saw. Few women complaining about all the children, umm you choose the wrong beach! Waves were small, playscape was fun for the kids and sand was clean! No garbage bins are the one thing I did not like about the beach. Not even any in the restroom, you plan to take dirty diapers with you as the roast in the sun all day, yuck. Would come to this beach again. Parking was $28 so we chose to park on a side street for free. Came 5 days in a row, loved it :)

I love Roger Wheeler State Beach. It is clean and family friendly. They have rest rooms and hot showers. There's a snack stand for food. Best of all there is a small playground for the kids to enjoy. There's also cold showers if you just want to rinse off the sand before you leave. The waves are very mild so the kids can enjoy the water without being tossed around. It's a great family beach.

We parked for free on a side road and hiked in a half mile or so. I probably would have given this 2 stars, instead of 3, had I had to pay the high price for parking. TONS of people jammed onto this beach. Too many bodies for me. The sand was nice and soft. Other than that, there is not much positive I can say about this place.

Clean beach, manageable waves and very family friendly. The dressing area was okay, but like most beach dressing rooms slightly gross. There really was no where I felt safe putting my daughter down. Would definitely suggest it to families.

First time at this beach & it won't be my last! Excellent!! Sand was really soft & clean and the water, altho chilly was really clean. Not too many waves either which was nice. You can bring a picnic on the beach, which is what we did (it's carry in/carry out tho); altho they do have a concession stand which looked good but we didn't try. Oh, admission fee for out of state residents is $28.

Wonderful beach for everyone, especially for families, as the waves are small and the sand is white, fine and just perfect!

On vacation in Narragansett my family went to this beach because there are small children. The kids loved it. Very much a family place. The food was good but the lines were long. Had no problem parking.

We spent the entire day at this beach. The picnic tables were conveniently located throughout the beach. Parking was a bit steep for out of towners, $28!!!!! Clear and clean water and very family oriented. Bathroom is centrally located at the beach. We walked pass the private beach and found quite many clams in the water. Made some clam chowder for dinner. We walked to Galilee, had clam cakes and ice cream, then bought crabs. What a day!!
