This collection and the people who oversee it made this excursion a highlight. In Seal Harbor, you will find a wonderful jewel of the island. The early automobiles are in excellent condition. They are often from the estates of wealthy New Englanders. There are some that you will never see anywhere. In addition there are, from the same era bicycles, sewing machines, motorcycles, clothing, gas pumps, and other items and photos that make this a wonder walk back to the early 1900s. Make the effort, you will be glad you did. There is something for all ages and interests.

They have a really excellent and large variety of automobiles from the early years, I belive it is called from the "Brass Era"

Hi Brad,You're quite right about how our being off the beaten path can positively affect a visit to our museum. We care deeply about the type of experience our visitors have here, and understand that while we might have a higher number of people if we were located in Bar Harbor, our location on the "quietside" of the island means that those who do make it here are visiting because they're really interested in the cars and the history of the time period, and not just strolling in because they have nothing better to do. This offers a better experience for all. And as much as our visitors seem to enjoy talking to and hearing stories from our staff, we really enjoy talking to all our visitors that are so genuinely interested in what we have here and which we love to share with others! Thanks for visiting and for your review.HopeDigital Media & Communications Specialist

Glad you found us, and even more glad you found it worthwhile once you were here, even if you yourself are not a car nut! :)HopeDigital Media & Communications Specialist

Thanks for your review Alice. We see ourselves as a history museum as much as a car museum, and do our best to tell the stories of the time period (turn of the last century) and how the auto industry influenced, and was influenced by, all the many other technological changes occurring at the time.HopeDigital Media & Communications Specialist

How wonderful you were able to bring your son to the Museum after visiting it yourself so many years ago, I hope he enjoyed it too! We really do have something to offer everyone, even non "car-people" - the stories the cars offer and their role in an important time in history are so interesting in themselves, the autos just happen to be the "vehicle" (excuse the pun!) to examining all the changes happening at the last turn of the century. Glad you enjoyed your second visit as much as the first and appreciated the new exhibits we have now.-Hope RowanDigital Media & Communications Specialist

Hi Kathy glad you happened upon the Museum! It sounds like you and your husband appreciated both the aesthetics of the cars and the glimpse they provide into a fascinating era in history. Thanks for your review!-Hope RowanDigital Media & Communications Specialist

Thanks for visiting Mary Lou! Yes it's definitely a great activity for a rainy day when you don't want to be out and about in the park. Though on a really hot day it can be nice to visit since the Museum usually remains remarkably cool even without air conditioning. And on a nice day, the lawn in front the Museum is a great spot to eat your lunch, overlooking Seal Cove Pond and Western Mountain! -Hope RowanDigital Media & Communications Specialist

So glad you enjoyed your visit! I'm smiling at "just an hour" - we always advise visitors who come at the end of the day that they should plan on leaving themselves at least an hour to view the collection, and many people end up spending an entire morning or afternoon here, which is just fine by us. Those who say they want to just take a quick look usually end up staying for quite a long time after all!

Yes we're quite proud of the uniqueness of our collection, and our staff so enjoy sharing that with others. In addition to taking a car to Pebble Beach in a few weeks, we have also been invited to exhibit a car at Misselwood this weekend, and will be attending additional shows in the fall, so keep an eye out for us if you are in attendance at any car shows!
peterr205
Peter I'm glad you found us! It really is pretty amazing to be able to have history made so real by seeing these "primitive" cars, and thinking about how life and the role automobiles played in life was so different then. FYI the 1909 Locomobile did pretty well in the parade, it made it about three-quarters of the way through the parade route at which point a clogged fuel filter stalled it and it had to be towed by the Ford Huckster the remainder of the route. But we're proud of the Locomobile and our mechanics all the same!

Thanks for visiting Elizabeth! On sunny days I always am sure to bring my lunch outside to take in the awesome view myself. We hope our visitors take advantage of our location too, the picnic tables in front of the building are a great spot for an outdoor lunch before or after exploring our collection for those who bring sandwiches with them!HopeDigital Media & Communications Specialist
