We followed our inn keepers directions and drove up towards Elephant Mountain and the B52 Bomber crash site in the woods. We had no idea what to expect as we drew nearer to the right turn off the highway where we saw the sign with an airplane on it and turned onto the gravel trackand continued following these signs with airplane on them travelling deeper into the woods.as we did get further into the woods the roads got rougher so we had to go slower because we had a rental car and the last thing I wanted to do was damage the underneath of it.We arrived at a clearing and in front of us was a path leading up into the woods with a large sign that can be seen in our photos along with the many moving pictures of the B 52 remaining parts that was scattered all over a large area in the trees and on the ground.We have never witnessed a crash site of any sort before in our life so to witness this one made us feel very privileged to be there allowed to share this crash site with the american families very touching?Thank you for reading this John & Sue Eastbourne UK

Elephant mountain holds the preserved wreckage in the woods of a B52 bomber that crashed in January 1963. It is worth the short drive and hike to visit. Beautiful in the Fall.

We drove up the mountain to the crash site. The gravel roads are rough, though not too bad till the last mile or so. Could have used better signage. It's easy to get lost with all the dirt roads and ATV trails up there.The crash site is an easy walk from the parking lot. Definitely worth the visit especially for history buffs.

Great to see and great views all around. Also visit the B-52 crash site while you are there. Acessable in winter by snow sled

We visited the B52 crash site Colubus Day weekend. We were not sure what to expect but told by other visitors and locals it was a must see. It is easy to get to, just a 7 mile drive down a former logging road. It is cleary marked with yellow diamond shaped signs, there is a small pull off or parking area and then a few hundred feet to into the actual site.I was struck by how solemn and reverent this site is. The locals and many community groups take great care of the area.I was wonderful learning experience for our 8 year old.

We found this on trip advisor somewhat by accident and we are so glad we we found it! It is somewhat challenging to get to; several miles of travel on unimproved logging roads, but well worth the drive! The site is amazing to walk through the destruction and remnants of the crash. It is very quite, somber and serene. Very little traffic in the area. We actually asked one of the locals about it and they didn't know what we were talking about. Be aware that mapquest interchanges elephant mountain and rum mountain, so it's best to google directions. Be sure to watch for moose while traveling the area. Many of the roads are the same as traveled by moose guides. Well worth the time to see this!

Viewing the site of the 1963 B-52 crash site was worth the 7-mile gravel road journey which starts in Greenville Maine on Prong Pond Rd off of Lily Bay Rd. There is a yellow sign with a plane on it which indicates the B52 site. It is 7 miles of gravel roads through the Maine woods to the parking lot. Once arriving at the lot it is a short walk up a path to the remains of the crash and the memorial.

The logging / dirt and gravel roads are well maintained, a bit tricky to follow, but signage is there, be observant while driving to stay on track.

short hike in but you can not put into words what you will see as you walk into this site. It will hit you with some emotion to know men died there in the wreckage doing thier job.

Living in the Mooshead Lake Region, I had heard about the "B-52 crash site" for years, and just finally was able to go and experience it first-hand while family was visiting. I didn't really know what to expect. First though, there are a few different ways to get there, so do a little research, and it is listed in places as a 'hike,' although the way we went was more of a really long drive on dirt roads, with a little hike. Not sure if that is the norm. Anyway, for hikers you might expect more, but don't worry, it is worth the drive and the lack-of challenge. The way we went, certainly makes it accessible for all ages. It is a beautiful, somber spot, a great moment to reflect and give thanks to the men and women that serve our country and fight for our freedom. I cannot say enough good things about this experience other than, if you are in the area, you NEED to go...take your kids for a teachable, fun and active moment, take your loved ones, family, friends and parents to share an moment in time and history....it is breathtaking and honestly, considering its age, well preserved and cared for, thankfully. There are plaques of honor around, and a lot of information here and there...It's truly a special place. You will be glad that you took the time.

Good for family with small children. Short walk to crash site...long drive through the woods to get there.

After driving through the woods for what seemed like forever, we finally found the B-52 crash site. There may be an easier way to find the site but we had started off looking for moose and realized we were in the area of this site. It is a nice hike with lots of information posted along the way. Very well preserved and definitely a moving experience.
