Even with a map, I had to ask directions. The museum is that big, but the layout is a little odd. There are some very interesting exhibits here. I especially enjoyed the Shaker exhibit. The kids love the small Sesame Street exhibit and the play area. The 9/11 exhibit is heart-wrenching, but there are a lot of displays that have been there for as long as I can remember. I understand there are new people coming in all the time, but I do wish they'd change up some of those old exhibits. The kids love the carousel on the 4th floor. But that floor is very empty. They could certainly add more exhibits in that area. They don't charge to ride the carousel, but do ask for a donation. They do the same for entrance to the museum. It's free, but they ask for a donation.

It's a good place to visit and explore the stories of USA, specially the New York Region. It's free at fridays!

Lots of the displays are old, feels a little mildewed. Children enjoyed the first time, and we reluctant to revisit...

We have been to the museum many times, but still learn something new each time. My kids are young (infant,2,5, and 7) and love the easy layout. I love having room to push the stroller!

Exceptional exhibit on 9-11, New York City, and a great exhibit on the Shakers as well. Outstanding mineral collection, the 4th floor carousel is exceptional, great research library, and Discovery Center for children. Great birds, nature and Adirondacks exhibits, along with a great research library. All of this at no charge! Allow 2 to three hours at least,if not more!

Was really impressed by the size of the museum and the number of exhibits, especially the 9/11 exhibit - very moving. Was only able to spend about an hour there and you really need at least 2 hours to really see and appreciate it all.

What's not to like in this amazing resource..... Stop up to pour through the film censorship archives for a unique look into the past.

The NYS museum at the plaza is a great destination and learning experience for all ages. Parking below the plaza is easy and there is also a parking lot next to it.

This museum has something for every age and interest: history, fine art, folk lore, biology, geology, etc. Fun for folks who have relocated from NYC as they have an old subway car and several exhibits about old NYC neighborhoods. Excellent job on the 9/11 exhibit too. Special exhibitions are first rate; right now there is one about the Shakers and another of contemporary Native American art. Highly recommend for adults and children alike.

So many "locals" don't take the time to go to our State Museum here in Albany. Granted, parking can be a pain. It has some history for everyone. Local 4th graders will benefit since NYS curriculum is our state's history. It goes through NYS's past in a very interesting way ! The 9/11 display is quite impressive and,as an adult, quite moving. Adirondack and Native American exhibits are neat. The carousel is a lot of fun and very pretty to see. Over the course of the year there are special events, like late February, when it's NEW YORK IN BLOOM ! Take the time and enjoy !!Stop in to the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception next door-remodeled and also quite historical.

The NYS gem and mineral exhibit is my personal fave. Also have enjoyed the fire truck exhibit, some of the old horse drawn pumpers are really cool. Takes a few hours to go through.

I was pleasantly surprised when I visited this gem in the middle of Albany. It possesses somewonderful and diverse exhibits. I didn't expect to see the 9/11 exhibit and it was very moving. All together it was well worth the visit.

I love to go to the museum and have taken our grandchildren several times in the last few months- just a great way to enjoy an afternoon
