My wife and I have visited Cedarmere many times over the past 2 years. It was the country home of the 19th century romantic poet, newspaper editor and civic leader, William Cullen Bryant. It's located on a 7-acre site in the Village of Roslyn Harbor on Long Island. Besides the beautiful house which has recently been restored, the property has a large pond (actually a small lake), boathouse, old mill (also recently restored) and landscape gardens designed by Bryant himself. The gardens boast a wonderful view with spectacular sunsets across Hempstead Harbor. The land was originally a settlement in the early 17th Century. It was later owned by a Quaker farmer called Richard Kirk who built the original house in 1787. Bryant purchased the property in 1843 and named it Cedarmere after the cedar trees which surround the pond. He also altered the original house several times over the years and had a mill built in 1862 to replace the original. The mill is located down by the water's edge and was beautifully renovated in 2013.
