Old Forge Hardware is an Adirondack icon. Built in 1902 by Moses Cohen, the hardware store is the hub of Old Forge and multiple surrounding Adirondack communities. and don't let the word "hardware" fool you. Yes, there are lots of tools available, but chances are, whatever else you think you might need will be there, too. This includes clothing, footwear, pajamas, food, toys, kitchen utensils, pots, pans, fishing, camping and hiking gear, and the absolute BEST bookstore for a hundred miles. Forget Barnes and Noble.......Old Forge Hardware has more books and better books than they could hope for, including current fiction, classic literature, children's books, and hands down, the ultimate selection of books about the Adirondacks. Everything is competitively priced. If nothing else, go just to see the quilts and bedding or the fishing poles, or the dehydrated food for backpackers, or the candy selection. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. A history of the store and its founder is included on their website: www.oldforgehardware.com If you can't make the drive, you can ship online. It'll definitely be worth your time.
