If you are fan of Edward Hopper, you should definitely make a point of visiting this small museum, set in his boyhood home in Nyack NY. Seeing the light fall through the window of his bedroom facing the Hudson river gives one a pretty clear idea of how it influenced his use of light and shadow in his works. The artifacts from his childhood were also fascinating, including his bicycle and high chair.

This is the house where Hopper grew up. His bicycle is still here. Hopper started the Hudson River School of Painting movement. As one views the surrounding landscapes, it's easy to see where inspiration came from. The changing exhibits are interesting and the home is the center of many musical and cultural events in the very sophisticated and diverse town of quirky Nyack.

Stop if you are an Edward Hopper fan - the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. But there is not a great deal to see. You can look out Hopper's childhood bedroom window and see the view to the Hudson. The House has a few artifacts including a paint case, Hopper's bicycle and wooden high chair. Photos permitted without a flash. A small but nice collection of books and postacrds. WARNING - I do not think the upstairs bedroom is handicap accessible, Only Hopper fans will want to pay the $7 admission fee. There are also rotating exhibits of local artists.

Unless you're a major Edward Hopper fan, I wouldn't make the trip to Nyack only to tour his childhood house, but if you're going to be there, this is a wonderful place to stop for a half hour to tour the house and learn about his upbringing. You'll see some of his drawings as well as his bedroom with the easel and studio table he built, his paintbox and more. Plus there's a great gallery on the main floor. The museum is in the heart of downtown Nyack, itself a fun town for a day trip if you enjoy antiquing. There's plenty of on-street parking close by to the museum and there are a bunch of great restaurants down the street.

Located in a historic house it offers some very good art. They have a range of art that should interest most art lovers. I like the relaxed feel and small town location. It really is a hidden gem in rock land county.

It is always inspiring to see and experience the sites that were part of the lives of famous people ( particularly painters ). The Hopper house is one such place. It is easy to see how his painting was effected by the quality of light throughout the house and around town. Many of the subjects of his paintings are still standing and you can take a walking tour using the map provided by the docents. The architecture and backstory of the house's construction is a delight for design and history buffs. The artifacts,i.e. Hopper's old bicycle and paint box are charming and make a human connection to the artist and his life, as do the caricatures of his relationship with his wife. There is also an exhibit area for shows by other artists that changes periodically.Don't miss going upstairs to see the bathroom and bedroom ( now a studio that is in use by a writer). Well worth an hour (or less) of your time.

Very interesting and run by a devoted volunteer staff who are enthusiastic and willing to share their knowledge.

Don't expect his paintings, but have imagination. Many of homes in town were used as details in his paintings.

i thoroughly enjoyed visiting the edward hopper house. the staff are friendly and informative; the gallery had an outstanding show of dorothea lange's work; and it was a thrill to be able to walk around in the house where edward hopper grew up.

Set in Edward Hopper's actual home, this museum features some great works. We saw the photographs of Dorothea Lange presented in a wonderful manner. Thursday night concerts are wonderful here, too. The setting in Nyack is spectacular. Just across the street is "Pretty Penny" former home of Helen Hayes and Rosie O'Donnell, and also the subject of a famous Hopper painting. Not to be missed site in the Hudson Valley.

It really helps to understand the artist's later works when you visit this home/museum & see for yourself the kind of light & riverview Hopper grew up with. Stand in an upstairs bedroom & look down the hill to the Hudson, as he must have done, many times. The permanent exhibit of his work is miniscule, but many other gallery shows are set in a revolving schedule. Outdoor live concerts are held in the backyard on Summer Thursday evenings.

The Hopper House is the birth home of Edward Hopper. The art gallery is supported by established art historians and contains many of Hopper's possessions and art. It is a tourist destination in Nyack not to be missed. Local artists further support the museum.
