Despite a couple postings I found other places that said otherwise, Piedra Falls is not accessible in winter. I know because we got stuck in a high clearance 4x4 truck Presidents' weekend about a mile in. Spent an hour and a half digging out and pushing. There were no signs that the road was closed so whoever maintains the road or oversees the area should post a sign that it isn't passable. I am guessing the falls up Wolf Creek pass are the way to go in the winter--Treasure seems to be a safer bet.

We were a large group from out of town, with ages ranging from the 50's to the 70's. The drive to the parking area was amazing with beautiful vistas and sightings of elk and deer. The trail to the falls from the parking area was fairly short, I'd say less than 1/2 mile, and relatively easy. There was one area where the trail was vary narrow and slanted, but everyone of our group made it through without any trouble. The falls were amazing. It is hard to come up with words that would give it justice. You have to see if for yourself.

This hike is pretty short and easy. There were a few pretty steep areas that were a little tricky the closer you get to the falls. My favorite part was the drive to the trailhead. It is a long drive for a short hike, but it is a beautiful drive. Completely worth the time. We loved it.

Tumbling down volcanic cliffs in two large steps, Piedra Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in the Pagosa District. To reach the falls, take Colo. Highway 160 west from Pagosa Springs to Piedra Road, at the crest of the hill. Turn right on Piedra and travel for about 17 miles to Middle Fork Road; turn right. Take Middle Fork Road two miles to East Toner Road and take a right. Follow the road to its end, about eight miles east, and follow the path upstream to the base of the falls. It’s about a 30 mile drive on decent county roads accessible via 2 wheel drive. Not to be confused with Piedra River Trail. Piedra Falls is only 1.1 mile out and back trail. The trail is good for all skill levels and is accessible from June until October. We did it in the end of September. It’s pretty easy and short. There were a few spots that seemed washed out when I was there, so watch your footing. It's only a 10-15 minute hike out and another 10-15 back, but you will stay for at least 20 minutes taking pictures, Long drive for a short hike but worth it for the pictures, especially if you combine this hike with some other activities in this area. There is parking lot in trail-head, no bathroom facilities. We recommend this hike.
