Fun to see how early settlers lived. Visited with a friend and with the local elementary school when our kids were in elementary school.

We were at Hiwan Homestead for a gathering following a wedding on Labor Day weekend. The grounds were lovely, but we did not arrive until the late afternoon for a BBQ. The food was catered and was situated in the pavilion-it did rain a little, so it was good that everything was covered. The buildings were closed, so we were not able to see everything the museum had to offer. However, it was officially rented out for this event. At 5 PM, the bathrooms were LOCKED and there were no other facilities available. It was unfortunate that this was not communicated so we could be prepared. If visiting in the area again, we would like to visit the Homestead while it is open.

Hiwan Homestead is a beautiful, 17-room log home, dating back to the late 1800's. filled with Native-American art and hand-crafted and natural decorative items. The rooms are filled with beautiful period and hand-made rustic furniture and often feature fascinating small flourishes in decoration. As a member of Jefferson County Open Space Parks, the homestead museum is open for tours year round. The museum hosts activities for school groups and has a number of events on the beautifully-kept grounds during the year. Located just north of the downtown area, the museum is easy to find and has lots of parking space. This is a definite stop while visiting Evergreen. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys historical homes and period museums.
