This is one of those things that you just can't believe until you see it yourself and have the chance to enjoy the magnificent and creative force of nature. Stopped by on my motorcycle and went in through a gravel road. I went a bit too far and did not realised that I could get stuck in the sand. After an hour of fun taking pictures well i got stuck... Just don't go too far in the sandy and gravel paved road. This is a must see.

An interesting rock formation but nothing else. If you drive US hwy 163 around the area, it is OK for a quick visit, maybe 5 - 10 minutes. Watching it from the highway is fine if you don't want to have a specific visit. Nothing lost.

If you're driving by anyway, just be aware that it's there and pull over for a quick picture. We took the dirt road up to it and behind to see about better angles. Nope, not really. We were just surprised how big it is when you get closer.

There are dirt roads leading closer. Fact is that cooler stuff awaits you either going north or south, but spending 5 minutes looking at this rock closer is worth it.

Make sure to go to Mexican Hat, Utah if you are anywhere near there. The Mexican Hat rock formation is a very cool to see. You don't want to miss it!

The formation lives up to it's name, but after seeing many of the other geological formations in the area, this is not one of my favorites. The Raplee Anticline at sunset, Valley of the Gods, and Monument Valley are much more impressive. But, since it was right on the way to Monument Valley from Valley of the Gods, it's worth taking a photo or two!

As you drive into south into Mexican Hat, Utah on U.S. Hwy. 163, be sure to look to the east for the rock formation that is the inspiration for the name of this very small town in southeastern Utah. It does, indeed, look like an upside-down sombrero (a Mexican hat). It is balanced on a point and appears that it could fall at any moment . . . until you remember that it has been in place for thousands of years . . . or more.

This spectral rock can be seen from the highway and then you can take a secondary road that takes you just to the base of the Mexican Hat. You also can climb there a little but is not recommendable as almost all the rock formations in southern Utah are sand rocks, the effect of long years of erosion. The surroundings mountains tell you a story of continuous rock and landslides. The beautiful Mexican Hat stands quietly in the desert, giving you a nit of the wonderful world you will encounter further south.

This is worth stopping the car and taking a picture, but nothing else really. Don't know why it's a popular tourist spot on comparison to other sights nearby.

You can't miss this rock formation as you leave town going north. It was a must see up close so took the well graded road out there. Worth a picture or two, then just hop back in the car and continue your trip. After all, if you stay in a town called Mexican Hat how can you not visit it's namesake?

Just a Rock on top of a rock that you can see from the road to the village... you can get closer on a dirt road.... that's all, folks !

Anyone passing by Mexican Hat, Utah should stop and take a picture of the "Mexican Hat" geological formation for which the town was named. The formation can best be viewed to the right heading north on US191 from town.

This mountain is on the way out of Monument Valley. Spectacular town with a population at last count of about 30. Terrific photo opportunities. We saw all the 3 attractions. in town including the Mexican Hat Lodge. Short visit, but had a great time. People terrific when you could find one. Looking forever to going back when we are in that area again! Temp over 100'. Loved it!

This last trip, we actually rode our motorcycles on the dirt road to see the upside down Mexican hat up close. Didn't stay long, just enough for a few pictures. The best part about it is that I haven't a clue why its still up there! It looks like it could fall at any time. A five minute stay is long enough.

It is just a quick stop along the road, but when you get out and take a look, it truly looks like a hat.
