Zebra is a bit tricky to find unless you do some upfront research to find out how to get there. Having a GPS with the coordinates was extremely helpful. Don't expect any cairns or other markers to help you find the canyon. There is nothing! The topo maps also don;t show it, so do your research ahead of time and borrow a GPS if you don't have one (make sure you know how to enter the coordinates correctly with the proper datum!)

I'm from Alabama, it's flat! Utah is NOT!! Ha! I was afraid of falling pretty much the WHOLE time! But I didnt & I made it to the bottom! Then there is the climb into the slot canyon! BRING ROPE!! IT HELPS!! There were gofer snakes in the canyons so watch out! I don't think they are poisonous. But the look like a rattle snake. Bring LOTS of water & a light snack. Cliff energy bars saved my life for 6 days in south Utah! Be the preper! Bring everything you may need! And have fun!

We drove in with an Impala and did this hike. It was gorgeous, and as our 5th park in Utah, it was very different from the other things we had seen. I;m glad we went, but we did not see any slot canyons, which was a little disappointing.

This was quite a disappointment to me but to be honest that is really my fault. Read this to avoid my pitfall. This is a long hike and can be challenging (I took "short cuts" which required scrambling, bushwacking, etc.). While there are some interesting things if you hike up like "moqui fileds" to be honest the hike alone isn't worth it - there are many spectacular hikes in Utah. The "payoff" is no doubt the slot canyon. I have seen pictures so I KNOW it is beautiful. Unfortunately it was not accessible due to heavy rains that put deep water right at the entrance. From what I understand you could swim the beginning and the most beautiful sections would then be dry once you get to a certain point but if you want to take pictures and didn't come preparred to swim with a dry bag, change of clothes, etc. that isn't likely to be possible/reasonable. We aren't talking shin or even waste deep water... deeper. No way to carry camera equipment through that without advance planning. After the fact I asked a guide how common this was and was told quite common for the time of year I was there (Just before Labor Day). He indicated that April - June is the best bet for a dry slot with other times of the year being questionable. Therefore my advice is do more research ahead of time than I did. You need more than directions and pictures under ideal conditions, you need to know if this is worth the trip on the day you plan to go. There are several reliable businesses in the area - Utah Canyons and Escalante Outfitters to name two that are right on Main St. in Escalante. Find out before you venture out if the slot is going to be dry, they lead hikes on a regular basis and hopefully can give you an ideal of the current conditions. Of course I always highly recommend a guide to make your experience as enjoyable as possible. I can recommend Escape Goats but no doubt others will do a good job too (I used them for a different hike). If you do go alone assuming you have good directions for the hike the drive should be no issue under normal weather conditions with a dry road. It is gravel/dirt but should be passable with a regular car. The following day I did "Big Horn" slot and that was dry so it could be a back up plan (it wasn't just that the water went away, the amount in Zebra would mean deep water for at least 4 weeks, dark narrow slots down't dry out quickly). I thought the hike and slot were very nice. I preferred the hike for Big Horn but given my research think the actual slot for Zebra is no doubt more impressive. I didn't see an already created entry for Big Horn so didn't review it separately. I do recommend it as an option... especially if you know Zebra is under water. Of course Spooky, Tunnel and other slots are options as well... again your best bet is to discuss options with a local guide or business. If you are not going to use their services however at least buy something in the store after pumping them for information. They do need to make a living.

A wonderful place chlenging. Different from any other place we visited. Not for very young children as it requires physical capability. The walk from HRR and back is long so better do that early in the morning if in the summer.

Zebra slot canyon is located about 5 miles outside Escalante Ut with trailhead about 9 mi down hole in the rock road. Zebra slot and tunnel are on the initially good trail ...After first couple miles the trail gets pretty iffy so check location details online. Worth the search, good hike, fun slot. Quite out of the way and not especially well visited so no crowds, rush, etc. Was little over waist deep in cold water when we visited but made the trec more interesting so jump in. Great scenery on the way & pix once in the slot.
