Listening to the volunteers at Montauk takes one back to the late 19th century and onward as they share the facts and stories relating to Iowa and its 12th governor and his family. It was an informative, illuminating, and intimate glimpse into the Larabees' everyday lives and what an exceptional family they were. This magnificent estate is unique in that essentially all the furnishings are the family's original possessions, from the dishes in the dining room to the books that line the library shelves to the musical instruments in the front room. Even the stenciled borders were wrought by one of the Larabee daughters!A fascinating history lesson.

For a small museum this was a precious place to enjoy. Many artifacts which included period furnishings, dolls, war weaponry and documents. Spend a couple hours at least.

The volunteers that serve at this state historical site are both very informative and gracious. The mansion belonged to Iowa's first governor and his wife, William and Anna Larrabee. The home is furnished with original furniture and other artifacts. The home has two pianos which I was offered the opportunity to play with great joy. The grounds of this fourteen room stone and brick home are equally impressive including several statutes honoring famous Americans. This peaceful setting north of Clermont, Iowa offers one a unique step back in time and insight into one of Iowa's gubernatorial families. The tour is free to the public and lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Visited this historical site with my kids on a field trip for school. Very interesting part of Iowa's history. Well documented and put together for all ages.

Great trip in time, to early days of Iowa settlement. Excellent stewardship of materials and furnishings from the period of settlement of the state.

Have visited his many times since 1978. Everything in this home of Iowa's 12th Governonr is all orginal as the family kept everything just as it was when Mrs. Larrabee died in hte early 1900s. Some excellant Art pieces and it was all given to the State of Iowa. It is a Free Museum with free guided tours from spring to fall. The State has maitained it well so we can see an actual piece of Iowa's History.

This beautiful old home is open for tours. The guides are enthusiastic about their job and know lots of stories about the original residents. The grounds are also quite nice, and I wish I had had more time to walk around the grounds. On the way to the house, I saw signs for tours of historic Clermont, which I'm sure would also be interesting.

Wow....be sure to take in an organ recital at the Union Sunday School during "the season" (summer through fall). A spectacular example of 19th c. American pipe organ building with excellent performers on deck.

We were working out way to New Hampton, Iowa on US Hwy 18 when we happened up this grand old home up on a hill. It turned out to be Montauk - home of Iowa's 12th governor, William Larrabee. Unfortunately, it was not open so we only saw the outside of the building and the outbuildings. Still - it was a very nice stop. Enjoy the Civil War statues around the groups and there are interpretive signs that explain who Governor Larrabee was and how he was important not only to Iowa, but to progressive legislation on a national level. Next time we'll try to get there during open hours!
