Never had a MIllstream I liked. The German heritage is phoning this in. A new master brewer couldn't hurt one bit.

I turned my brother in law on to this place a long time ago, and every time he comes to visit, we take a special trip over to the Amana colonies to fill up our growlers and sample some of Millstream's finest. I love going there when there isn't something going on in town because it can be a very relaxing experience. You can even sit out on the patio and have a cold one before heading home. It is a bit expensive, so bring some cash. It's worth it as a treat.

Bartender/cashier very knowledgeable and friendly. Very cool to be able to see where they brew the beer. You can sample the different kinds of beer. Great variety of drinks for young and old, from beer to cream soda.

The Amana colonies are great enough with craft shops and restaurants, but you must have a beer at Millstream. Very good beer and souvenirs. it makes for a very pleasant day!

The weekend we were there, it was understaffed. The live music was beyond family friendly with their song selection.

I live only about 25 minutes away from Millstream. We love to drive over and hit some of the stores in the Amanas, but our last stop is always at Millstream. We grab a beer or two and sit on their great outdoor deck and just enjoy and relax. They have some really fun events on the weekends - they participate in all of the Amana festivals and host some fun local live music. It can get a bit crowded on the weekends with events, but there's enough room outdoors that it never feels uncomfortable. Oh yeah, and their beer is excellent! My favorite is a winter brew, the Schokolade Bach. But they also brew a different beer every week or maybe month? That's only available at the brewery for a limited time. I always try to taste those and they've never disappointed.

Friendly, casual atmosphere. Great live music on Saturday's in summer. They are always grilling something. We recommend Johns White Ale.

Did you know that the Amana Colonies has an operating microbrewery? Back in 1985, the Millstream Brewing Co. opened its doors and became the first brewery to conduct business there in over 100 years. We judged the Iowa Pale Ale to have a strong, hoppy taste, somewhat akin to an India Pale Ale but not quite. The Back Road Stout was presented as an Oatmeal Stout with an alcohol content of 6.7%. To our taste, the BRS was similar to a middle-of-the-road Porter. Millstream advised that neither beer was for the faint of heart. Oh, which to choose? We purchased the Back Road Stout. Judging by the limited number of 6-packs left in inventory, the time for the 2013 Stout, a seasonal winter brew, was coming to an end. If you like freshly-brewed beer, be sure to taste Millstream’s sampler while relaxing in their outdoor biergarten.
