If you can gain entrance to the chapel do it! Spectacular tile work that can't be described. People occasionally picnic on the grounds. There are lakes and a herd of deer here

We went to see Tiny Tim. We found his grave if that is what you call it. He is in the mausoleum. Holy cow are they fancy! I have seen some in TV shows, but never in person. Elevator and restrooms in the building. After saying hi to Tiny we spent a while driving around and walking outside amongst the tombstones and there are some really fascinating ones. Hubert Humphrey is also buried here.

Keep your head down....no not out of respect....but to read the headstones. This is a greqat histroical spot of the who's who who built this town in addition to beautiful monuments mark great events in Mpls. Nice quiet spot to reflect as well.

When we visit big cities, we stop practically always in cemeteries. They are the witnesses of our passage on the Earth. That of Minneapolis is of a very big surface and a big thanks to the gardener who returned to us to the entrance with its truck during the closure.

This old cemetery in South Minneapolis has beautiful rolling hills and many names that most citizens will recognize. It's almost a "who's who" of Minnesota history. There are beautiful family stones, and an outstanding architectural gem in tn the chapel. And, don't miss the lower flats where many of the less wealthy are buried and have flat headstones. If you visit in the summer, check out Lake Harriet and the Rose Gardens which are right adjacent to it.Don't be in a hurry -- enjoy the day and the fantastic memories.

The chapel may be locked, but be sure to ask at the main building for the staff to unlock it for you plus pick up a map of the grounds. The mosaic is outstanding. You don't need to go aboard to see such beauty.

This is not just a cemetery. It is living history with many stories to be told about those residents buried there. It is also an oasis of well landscaped gardens and trees in the midst of the city. A place of peace where beauty can be admired and enjoyed.

Overlooking the lake, this cemetery is exceptionally serene and is beautifully designed. Majestic oak trees, winding paths and stunning architecture.

Do you ever enjoy going to a Cemetery? This is one to definitely enjoy. There are many very impressive monuments with some that overlook the river. This was a very pleasant place to visit and photograph.

What a beautiful cemetery in a lovely setting. Many great people and families are resting here. Governors, Senators and a VP ! Upon entering the cemetery, we turned right and stopped at the second mausoleum. The inside of the building was air conditioned and like a lobby of a grand hotel, with plush carpeting and oversize chairs. We went down the elevator to the lower level and turned left and went to the last alcove on the left. There was the tomb of Tiny Tim ! Check out the stained glass in this alcove, in the corner is a little devil running away from the saint in the window. The grounds and reflecting ponds are to die for . . . (sorry) but they are special.Worth a drive or walk thru . . . .

Lakewood cemetery, located on the east side of Lake Calhoun, is interesting since many famous people are buried there such as Hubert Humphrey, vice-president of the USA, and Paul Wellstone, beloved senator for MN. The real hidden gem, however, is the chapel. The overall design is based on the shape of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey. Six Italian mosaic artists who also did work in the Vatican created a beautiful interior dome filled with hovering angels, each bedecked with flowers of various kinds. The windows and corner pieces are also lovely, as are the mosaic trees in the front. It is one of the loveliest places I have been, and I have traveled to many cathedrals in Europe. You may need to request entry in the main building. There is an interesting little "museum" downstairs. http://www.lakewoodcemetery.com/History_Chapel.html

Lakewood Cemetery is located on the eastern shores of Lake Calhoun, directly south of the Uptown area of Minneapolis. I went on the self-guided walking tour with my wife on a Saturday morning and enjoyed strolling through this large cemetery. The day before we were walking around Lake Calhoun for the hundredth time and decided to do something different the next day and walk through the cemetery. We picked up the self-guided walking tour map and the cemetery administration building and used that to figure out where everything was. I was amazed at how large the cemetery was and how long we walked. The walking tour took about 2 hours so it was an interesting way to get some exercise. You can also e-mail the cemetery and arrange a free guided tour. The admin building is only open from 8-noon on Saturdays and 8 - 4:30 Monday through Friday (it is closed on Sundays). Knowing the hours are important as the bathrooms are inside this building.Highlights of the tour include seeing the graves of many famous Minnesotans including:Walker Memorial (Walker Art Center)Charles Loring (Loring Park)Washburn Memorial (Washburn High School)Fridley Monument (City of Fridley)Wellstone Memorial (Senator Wellstone)Pillsbury Memorial (founder of the Pillsbury Company)Mars Mausoleum (founder and inventor of the Milky Way and Snickers candy bar)Hubert Humphrey Monument (Vice-President of the USA)I also enjoyed visiting the Lakewood Memorial Chapel which is on the north side of the cemetery near the entrance. This chapel was built in 1910 and the interior is made up of small mosaic tiles arranged in the form of some detailed picture. It was cool to stand in the exact center of this building as the acoustics are amazing and everything was amplified (if you moved your feet the sound was amplified and was very loud).Overall I enjoyed getting some exercise by walking through this interesting cemetery and recommend it.

This is the most beautiful cemetery in the twin cities period. States founding families buried here along with Sen Humphrey and assorted Governors civil war heroes and other politicos. We have family buried there since 1865 and my family will be interns there as well so it must be good

This is a lovely place to spend an afternoon. Lots of historic figure buried here (you can pick them out by their elaborate monuments), and many unique areas within the cemetery. My grandmother is buried here, along with some other relatives, and if you go to the main building and ask, they will look up specific plots for you and mark them on a map. Make sure you come on foot or by vehicle...they will not allow you to bike through.
