When we arrived at the State School Orphanage we were told by someone there that if we had time we should also see the Prairie School Bank. The architecture is amazing and the story and history of the building were fascinating as well.

We went looking for a good local restaurant in the downtown area and ended up finding a beautiful architectural treasure of a bank building. We eat at the Costas Candies & Restaurant which was good, and after leaving, found ourselves at the St. Clair's for Men shop across the street where I purchased a very nice spring weight jacket. We were commenting on the beautiful business district and the gorgeous bank building and how proud they must be of it. The owners told us that we should go see the inside of the bank. Well, I kind of hesitated with it being a bank, but they said that it would be perfectly. Well, we bravely wandered into the current Wells Fargo Bank, trying not to feel like Bonnie and Clyde. Inside, we were told to look around and feel free to wander up to the balcony for better viewing. I timidly asked if it was okay to take pictures, and was told it would be fine, as long as I did not take pictures of any of the bank tellers. I found myself taking pictures inside this beautiful old bank building. I was almost left without words for this bank. It has four electrically-illuminated chandeliers called electroliers hanging from the skylight. They weigh 2 and 1/4 ton each. A ornate sculptured clock sits over the original vault area. Intricate green terra cota ornamets the main lobby. Each of the large murals are featured in gold leaf arches that mirror the stained glass windows. Did I say stained glass -- yes two twin huge stain glass arch shaped windows grace the front and side of the bank's upper walls which light the banks interior on sunny days.Forget Cabelas and the Outlet Mall - you have to see this Wells Fargo Bank Building. It is obvious that Well Fargo is very proud of it!

As architecture buffs, this building was high on our list of sites to visit. It didn't disappoint. The outside is wonderful and it's so nice to have a park across the street to get a really good view. Once you go in the bank's staff is very helpful. They gave us the brochure for the self-guided tour and pointed out several details. The self-guided tour is very good and there is more information in some of the hallways and above the teller cages. Thankfully Wells Fargo is very welcoming and realizes the jewel they have. The ornamentation on the inside is fabulous. By getting up to the second floor, we were more able to appreciate the details.

We have several accounts at this icon of a bank. The employees have always been helpful and we feel out money is secure. The architecture is classic and the best scenery next to Central Park and downtown Owatonna, MN..

This "jewel box" bank building designed by Louis Sullivan is well worth a side trip off the interstate. From the outside, the bank looks rather imposing. Inside, it is a shock of color and ornamentation--fabulously beautiful. The bank is now a Wells Fargo branch and is open during normal banking hours. (HA!) It is a wonderful surprise for anyone who is interested in art or architecture. Just a short hop off of I-35.

It doesn't take long to drive off I-35 to arrive at this site in downtown Owatonna. Open during banking hours for public viewing, identify yourself as a tourist and ask to be directed to the stairs to the balcony, where one gets a closer view of the ceiling, murals, and windows. We were able to take all the photos we wanted and enjoyed our time without interrupting the employees of the bank.

The historic preservation of this bank is amazing. It's beautiful! We are indeed fortunate this building remains in such great condition and is available for public viewing.

Built in 1908, Louis Sullivan, the Father of American Architecture, took 18 months to design and build this bank. It is the first of several banks, all called Jewel Boxes. The "jewels" are the magnificent colors that shine through stained glass arched windows and skylights. In addition, 4 18 foot electroliers hang from the ceiling and appear to be glorious grapevine reaching down to lift you up. The walls are ornamented with murals, stenciling and terracotta ornament. No one ever did architecture by Louis Sullivan or has since. His work stands alone as a monument to his genius. Original furniture pieces are correctly called "early Prairie School." But Sullivan's architecture truly fits his dictum: Form Follows Function. Also, do not miss the Teller Wickets. Most bank employees know a little of the history and there is a "hand out" detailing much of the history.

This building is gorgeous! Actually, the whole town square around it quite lovely and quaint - great for a leisurely walk.

I have never seen such stunning architecture within the US, just beautiful, well preserved, definetly worth the stop!

Has to be seen to be believed. You go up stairs and read the history and see the beautiful murals on all of the walls and ceilings. It is also a functioning Wells/Fargo Bank.

A very uniquely designed building, just minutes from the freeway. See the other reviews for knowledgeable architectural info, but I can vouch for it's distinctiveness and beauty as someone who doesn't have any knowledge of architecture. Also check out the lovely courthouse across the square.

I have been in or through Owatonna over a hundred times and finally made it to this Louis Sullivan desgned building. Imagine a farmer taking his deposit to the bank back in the 20s or 30s. It is a palace and something to behold. Check out the mural of the cows, the orniate tile work and the light fixtures. Luckily Wells Fargo still keeps this landmark going for us to all enjoy.

Worth the effort to see. You don't see a building like this every day.

Worth a stop in to look. This is now the main Wells Fargo branch. Take about 20 minutes to go inside and just gaze all around. Amazing!
