Franklin Pierce might not have been the most liked or most famous President, but he was a President nonetheless. His grave is within a closure of the Old North Cemetery, unremarkable from the other graves in that area, except for the adornments and flags left there. This is a quiet cemetery, and it was nice to take a minute and pay our respects.

Franklin Pierce is a largely forgotten president from the 1850s whose primary achievement seems to have been not getting us into the Civil War that eventually broke out a half dozen years later. He was the head of the New Hampshire Democratic party, something the Democrats of today would probably like to forget given his tepid stand on the issue of slavery. He did not help his own cause very much by maintaining his friendship with Jefferson Davis even after Davis became president of the confederacy. Pierce drank himself to death after his wife died shortly after the civil war. This grave is worthwhile as an attraction in large part because it is so unremarkable. This was a man who was a general in the Mexican-American War, a U.S. Congressman, a U.S. Senator, and a U.S. president, yet he is all but forgotten. The cemetery is just outside the immediate downtown area and a block or two from the relocated Pierce Manse. You can just drive in and walk 100 feet (maybe less than that) up to his tomb. The cemetery is not very large - Pierce's tomb is in the gated area off to the side. It was easy to find as they still have a wreath and red white and blue banners on it. One sad thing to note is the ages of his children on one side of the monument, two of whom are buried in the same place. Pierce's first son died 4 days after childbirth while Pierce was a congressman - no-one knows where he was buried. The second died of typhus at age 4, and is buried here. The third died in a train accident shortly after Pierce was elected President, plunging his wife into depression for obvious reasons. Regardless of the merits of his presidency, it is heartbreaking to see that all three of his children never saw adulthood.A piece of trivia: The character "Hawkeye" Piece in the old M*A*S*H show played by Alan Alda was actually named "Benjamin Franklin Pierce".The Pierce Tomb is worth a short stop if you are in Concord and/or visiting the nearby Pierce Manse.

What can be said of this spot other than the tomb is kept in good condition and the surroundings are peaceful.

Make sure to get directions from the pierce manse employees or have one drive you there so you don't miss it. Not the highlight of a trip to concord.

We use this city owned & public cemetery to walk in the spring/summer/fall....lots of hills & mature trees....just stunning autumn colors to stare at & photograph. Not only is New Hampshire native son President Franklin Pierce's tomb here, but Space Shuttle Astronaut/Concord Teacher Christa Mc Auliffe is also interred here.

Few Americans will recognize the name Franklin Pierce as resident of the Unite States. He is one of the more average ones whose administration did not produce anything memorable. This does not mean he was a substandard president, he just lead at a quiet time in History. I traveled to New Hampshire to visit my sister and 3 month old niece and took them to this gravesite. The cemetery is old and befitting a former POTUS. Pierce's grave is simply but much more impressive than the likes of Buchanan or even Coolidge. I enjoyed my visit and think my niece will grow up with a better appreciation of history after visiting Pierce and both Adams in Massachusetts before she was six months old.

This was an unexpected surprise for me as I was wandering through this cemetery letterboxing one day. I didn't realize that Pierce was buried at that site until I was well into the cemetery. The grave had a Presidential wreath on it and I was told by another onlooker that the White House sends a wreath every year at Christmas time to the grave of each deceased President. The cemetery itself is old and lovely, with many of Concord's orginals buried there. Make a visit, it's well worth it!

Indeed, our fourteenth president is buried at the Old North Cemetery located a few blocks from downtown Concord. If you want to program your GPS, the address is 137 North State Street, with a zip code of 03301. This place is a quiet and subdued New England cemetery. The tombstone lies alongside an outer perimeter fence. Several small American flags have been placed along the front of President Franklin Pierce's gravesite. My girlfriend and I were here around 10:30 a.m. and spent about twenty minutes viewing the designs of the various headstones in this older cemetery. Not one other person was at this site during the time that we visited. You can see the history of the area at this resting place.

For those who visit sites of our nation's presidents... Just down the street from the Pierce Manse is the Old North Cemetery, which includes the burial site of our 14th President Franklin Pierce. If you enter from the front of the cemetery (by the historic marker on State Street), you'll need to walk almost to the back. You will pass another gated area within the cemetery, and Pierce's gravesite is in this area.
