Interesting to see how the state government worked and all of the meaning behind the architechture and pictures.

You have got to visit this historic building just to stare up at the rotunda - it is beautiful! I didn't see much else of the building, but this part alone is worth the trip!

In a city that still features some good Italian Restaurants, the State House is impressive and architecturally interesting, I was there on business, so I didn't take the tour. But this piece of active government and history is worth a trip.

This is a great place to visit if you find local history or politics at the state level to be interesting. Even if you are just an architecture fan it is probably worth the time. It is interesting to learn about the various aspects of state government that are discussed during the tour.I have been to nearly thirty state capitols, three Canadian provincial capitols and two national capitols. As such, I have a lot of experience to make comparisons with what I saw here. While this building was middle-of-the-road architecturally compared to what I have seen among other capitols, it was nonetheless full of interesting features. Keep in mind that such a comparison includes the most architecturally impressive buildings in the US so even a middling among these is quite impressive in its own right.The gold dome structure presents a nice impression from the outside and the portion of downtown Trenton in which it is located retains much of the colonial charm and intimacy from its 18th century roots. We parked in the garage behind the capitol and entered through the lower level. Getting into the building is a bit of a pain with post-9/11 security protocols. We had to pass a guard station with a metal detector and then made our way up to the rotunda.When we reached the rotunda, we encountered a very pleasant woman who was able to get us hooked up with a tour that was soon to start. We chatted and her pleasant manner and Jersey accent were the perfect combination to put us in the local state of mind needed to get the maximum enjoyment from the experience.We were placed in a tour with a school group and I was a little apprehensive at first. However, it turned out to be fine. I was happy to have the guide cater to the group while we listened. It was actually refreshing in a way to hear things from an 8th grade perspective.The central room below the rotunda was a nice sight as it was interesting to look around at the governors' portraits and enjoy the architectural niceties. There were a few interesting features along the tour including the flags and the small sculpture of the red oak that had an intriguing story of symbolism. But the highlights, as with most capitol buildings, were the legislative chambers. Both the house and senate chambers were quite nice architecturally and replete with symbolic features. It was also interesting to hear about the legislative processes in NJ and the current political makeup of the state bodies.Overall, it is worth taking the time to take the our here if state history and state politics are at all interesting to you. It is also worthwhile if you appreciate architecture. Definitely take the tour as the guides do a great job pointing out and explaining the salient features of interest. And of course it is a nice feature that it is free!

Drop-in tours start on the hour from 10am to 3pm. Security will not let you enter the building until about 5 minutes prior to the tour, so you cannot just go in and look around. The tour was good, the guide knowledgable. We were on a drop-in tour and got to see the rotunda, the House chamber and the Senate chamber. It appeared that there was scheduled group also getting a tour at the same time and they got to see the governor's office and perhaps other areas we did not.

We've toured 30 state capitols (on our way to collecting all 50) and our tour guide's knowledge, attitude, and presentation was among the best. I'd highly recommend a stop at the New Jersey Statehouse if you're ever in Trenton.

We took a tour of the NJ State House today. It was about an hour in length and was led by a very friendly and informative tour guide. The guide explained many facts about the history of the building and some of the people that have walked through its halls. We visited the different rooms where the legislature gets together to work on the issues of the day. Since it was not busy at the time we were also allowed to go into the outer office of the Governor and saw the nice Christmas Tree there. We did not get to see the Governor but that's not part of the tour and he probably has plenty to do as it is. This State House tour was enjoyable and a good stop on any tour of Trenton NJ.

The inside of the building is very building as is the history surrounding it as they have recently found a foundry underground there. Worth visiting.

The exterior is a bit of a mishmash - the building was built and rebuilt over the 200+ years it has been in use - but the triple deck central rotunda is very elegant and was restored in 1999. The free tours are pretty interesting; you can NOT walk around the building unescorted.

The free tour of the capital is great for kids and adults. The building is impressive and you may meet some legislators. An educational experience for kids.

Worth a visit to anyone in town, the Old Barracks and War Memorial right by the Marriott...take a tour....see a little bit of history. I see it everyday and it is wonderful to be a part of history.

The State of New Jersey offers free tours of the Statehouse on a daily basis. You can make arrangements for a private group or just drop in and catch the next schedule tour. The Statehouse is an interesting mixture of a number of architectural styles and the tour provides information about the workings of state government. Good for all ages although mobility can be an issue on some tour routes. Good to let you guide know if you have difficulty with stairs.

A sprawling building that dates to 1792 but has been built out and rebuilt ever since, this is quite a place. Fascinating spaces on display, particularly if you take the Art and Architecture tour. The New Jersey State Museum is on one side of the block and the Old Barracks Museum is on the other. Impressive!

Happen to be here the day the governors changed, very exciting! Good place to have a tour and have the kids learn about government and how it works. Beautiful architecture!

Tours are given on the hour and it's informative. World War II Memorial is across the street. Don't venture too far from the downtown area.
