Located in National Park on the Delaware River at the site of Red Bank Battlefield, you'll find the home of James & Ann Whitall, promiment Quakers who once owned this stretch of land which became so important in the battle for control of Philadelphia by the British. The home itself was the centerpiece of their 411 acre plantation. This year the second floor of the home is also opened for tours and the kitchen tells the story of an indentured servant who worked at the home. A scale model of the battlefield is also on display, in the room which was used as the operating room after the battle. Volunteer Docents are available Thursday through Sunday from 1 pm until 4 pm May through October to give tours. There are flags posted on the front and riverside of the home, which will alert you at a glance if it's open (they are red, white & blue) with OPEN shown. The main entry is now on the riverside, by a handicapped accessible ramp. The gardens of the house have been expanded and now include a butterfly house as well. No admission fee.

The James and Ann Whitall House is located on the Delaware river bluffs at Red Bank (National Park) adjacent to the battlefield of Fort Mercer. It is an important Revolutionary War site of Southern New Jersey. The house was built in 1748 and in 1777 was caught up in the attack of on Fort Mercer serving as an at hoc improvised field hospital. There is a legend stating that Ann continued to spin her yarn while the battle was raging outside. After the siege of Red Bank, October 22, 1777 she treated the wounds of Colonel Carl von Donop and his Hessians. This 18th century house is not always open for tours so call ahead (856) 853-5120. The tours usually run by volunteers are very interesting and educational but even if you are out of luck the house can be viewed from the outside and there is an herb garden located near the kitchen door. Christmas tours are attractively conveyed as well. The house is located adjacent to former Fort Mercer with its historic monuments and surrounded by 44 acres of park with riverside walking paths, picnic pavilions, playground.
