The Jemez mountains remain one of our favorite places to visit after living in NM for 2 years. The drive up through the canyon surrounded by red rock is best done in the morning or evening so as to get the changing sunlight on the cliffs. Jemez Springs is a funky town with hot springs and local fare. Be sure to stop at Soda Dam and Battleship Rock. The Villa Caldera is breathtaking and monumental. As you crest the top of the mountains you take in views of the Sangria de Christo range near Santa Fe.

Jemez is an out of the way special area. I spent a week enjoying the mountains and views of this gorgeous area. The natioal recreation area is quiet, and ver accessible. A drive up to the "tunnels is well worth the time. Red rock views which rival any, cascading streams, pure solitude. This New Mexico without the tourists.

It snowed while we were there and was incredibly beautiful. We hiked in the woods, soaked at Giggling Springs while it snowed on us, played billiards at Los Ojos Saloon, and stayed at Canon del Rio B&B. It was magical.

Mountains are always nice and snow makes them even more magical. On a higher point at night, we had an amazing view on the stars cos the sky is almost always clear in here. During just 2 hours we saw several animals - dears, rabbits. In the winter the road from Los Alamos to Jemez is a bit dangerous due to snow and ice but be careful, its worth it :)

Such beautiful drive through these mountains. We saw a huge buck come down the mountain and run across the road. Be careful at dusk and dawn.

The only way to explain the beauty of this area is to come and visit. If you do not, it is your loss.

Used to come here all the time as a child, loved to camp here, explore, etc. Wonderful landmarks, great forest, excellent get away from the city life!!!!

Be prepared for high altitudes--the Jemez Mountains begin at about 8600', but they are beautiful, varied, and oh so scenic. The air is sweet, indeed.

My daughter and I recently drove along Route 4 through the Jemez Springs area. We stopped at the Pueblo's friendly and helpful Walatowa Visitor's Center, visited the impressive Soda Dam and did a bit of hiking from there, were awed by the colors of the mountains and sipped excellent cappuccino at Highway 4 Coffee (good food, friendly but slow service). An altogether excellent day!

We drove up through the Jemez mts. Very pretty, I love all the colors of rock. We stopped at the springs and took some pictures. Great background.

Jemez hot springs are on maps but there is no sign to announce your arrival at this quiet trail across the river and up into the rocky pools in this dense pine forest. From the small parking lot off Highway 4 we hiked up a fairly easy incline to two quiet warm thermal pools overlooking the mountains. We idled in the sun splashed water then headed to the town pub, Los Ojos, for beer, burritos, and enchiladas on the outdoor patio.

The fishing was good at the fish hatchery and Fenton Lake was pristine and quiet. You could kayak there.
