amazing that all the contrasting colors are natural. Beautiful place to see grand prismatic and others. It is an easy hike so it is crowded.

Walking and driving through Yellowstone you feel like you are in another world because the Geyser's and water pools are like something you never thought you would see in person

It pains me to rate this as average but I have to. Excelsior geyser crater is impressive and Grand Prismatic's run-off bacterial mats are interesting but that's about it. The colors you see in overhead photos are usually shrouded in steam and even if there was no steam you are at such at low angle they would not be nearly as impressive. The main problem is the tour buses. This and the lower geyser basin seem to be their favorite spots, I assume because the boardwalk is a short simple loop so nobody can get lost or left behind. Since there are no branches everyone who gets off the bus floods past you, noisily and in a big hurry. There is no escape. This is one of the places best viewed from afar. There is a nice parking area and overlook on the side of the road maybe half a mile south. Or hike the Fairy Falls Trail. Or visit off hours when there are no tour buses.

However, it has two large features:1. A 200-by-300-foot (60 by 90 m) wide Excelsior Geyser which pours over 4,000 U.S. gallons (15,000 L; 3,300 imp gal) per minute into the Firehole River. 2. The largest hot spring in Yellowstone, the 370-foot (110 m) wide and 121-foot (37 m) deep Grand Prismatic Spring is also found here. This can be a challenge to photograph due to the amount of steam.

This has some beautiful pools, Grand Prismatic among them. If the steam doesn't block your view, you will love it. It is also the gateway to a beautiful hike up to an overlook and waterfall.

Words can hardly describe the beauty that you will see here. It was by far our favorite among the multiple geyser and hot springs locations. The entrance is located about five miles north of Old Faithful, so it's easy to combine with that trip.Certainly, Grand Prismatic Spring is the highlight, but there are many other sites worth seeing as well. You'll be near the Firehole River and see the brilliant run-off and vivid colors from the very active springs as you walk along the boardwalk.Excelsior Spring is an old geyser (no longer active) that still pumps out over 4,000 gallons of boiling water a minute into the river. The water is crystal blue and it appears more dramatic because of it's jagged raised edges. As you continue on, you'll begin to see Grand Prismatic Spring and the unbelievable colors that it produces. It's also the deepest and largest hot spring in Yellowstone but it actually is breathtaking. As beautiful as the views are from here, in order to truly appreciate it, I recommend hiking to higher ground to see from above. We made the quick trip (by car) to the Fairy Falls trailhead. There is a very small parking area here, but it's worth waiting for a spot. The trail itself is very wide, gravel and easy to navigate (by foot or bike). If you walk for about a mile, you'll begin to see paths leading up the side of the mountain. I included a picture of the path we took, but you can recognize it by a metal pole at the entrance to the dirt path leading up and to the left. We grabbed a walking stick as we headed up. I would call it a moderate hike (easy for those with experience) on a slippery dirt path over trees. Just be careful to ensure you have good footing, and look for snakes (we saw one!). The views are so worth it!One other recommendation, if you are using a DSLR, make sure that you have a polarizing filter. The pictures I added are un-retouched, the colors are that vivid, as long as you cut the glare.

This is a really amazing place to visit and well worth the short walk it takes to get there. From the parking lot there is easy access to a bridge that goes over the river and leads to a boardwalk that takes you around the basin. From there you take a loop that goes past amazing thermal springs and smoking geysers. We didn't do any of the hikes to see them from the top, but we were pleased with what we were able to see. We were able to see bison, bear and wolf tracks in the bacteria in the springs. It brought it all much closer and it was fun to see. They do have toilets (non-flush toilets and no sinks) in the parking lot - good to know in case of an emergency.

Mother Nature at her best. This is a beautiful display of color and geo-thermal magic! It's an easy loop from the parking lot that anyone could manage. It can be quite hot, and a hat or umbrella might suffice on such days.

This easy boardwalk trail is about 8/10’s of a mile. As we walk over the wooden footbridge, our senses become alive with the sights and sounds of the Midway Geyser Basin. A powerful but narrow stream of hot water is cascading down a rocky slide into the Firehole River. The billowy clouds of steam hovering over Excelsior Geyser Crater may make it difficult to see but … be patient because a break in the breezes offers glimpses of the water-filled crater. Nearby is a sign providing interesting historical information about Excelsior. Notice how the steamy landscape creates long, shadowy images of people. Feel the gentle breezes that carry the steam across the surface of beautiful Grand Prismatic Spring (the centerpiece of this geyser basin). Its colorful rings of algae circle its deep-blue center. The best way to see Grand Prismatic Spring is from a higher perspective but the colors are beautiful at ground level too.

I had seen wonderful pictures of the Grand Prismatic Spring here and really wanted to see it. Unfortunately, the day we visited proved to be to different from a temp standpoint so there was a massive amount of steam coming off the spring. Regardless, this is worth the short hike. You can see the elements of the prismatic colors (better I'm sure if you hike one of the nearby hills) but the boiling water coming off the other thermal features and pouring into the passing river was very impressive in and of itself. We got a kick out of the "no swimming" signs right by the boiling water entry :) As with most things in the park - the boardwalk is sturdy and well maintained making for a relatively easy hike. The colors of the algae in this area and the elaborate formations and patterns it creates was worth seeing. Very enjoyable.

Another awesome collection of geothermal wonders. Easy and convenient walkways make for an enjoyable visit.

We walked it twice mainly because it was so windy the first time we the smoke and steam stopped us seeing much. Excelsior crater geyser is huge and the Grand Prismatic Springs has amazing colours.
