This basin is right next to Yellowstone Lake, and it is so interesting to see the boiling water, and all its colors, right next to a cold lake. There was a nice boardwalk going around the geysers, a slow 1/2 mile (?) walk. You also don't need to do the walk around if not able. Definitely worth stopping and seeing.

This was one of stops on the daylong drive around the lower loop inside Yellowstone NP. We stopped here and scored a parking place which was a surprise since the park was really crowded this day despite the steady daylong drizzle. There is a large wooden boardwalk that encircles all the geysers, springs and fumeroles here. We especially like the Abyss Pool and Black Pool. Black Pool is near the shore of Yellowstone Lake and is a beautiful blue color (despite the name). It was right next to the walkway so you could get great pictures of it. Having this geyser basin so close to the lake gave it a different feel than some of the other geyser locations. Despite the crowds, we enjoyed the stop. I will say that the bathrooms were really reeking that day so I waited for a better place to use the facilities.

This is a very compact area of hot springs (rather than geysers - some used to spout rarely at present) right on the shore of Lake Yellowstone. There is a walkway all the way round some of the springs are very colourful (although not in the same way as Grand Prismatic - mainly deep in blues). Definitely worth stopping if you are in the area.

Went to West Thumb first thing in the morning and arrived before almost anyone else - it so great to have the place to ourselves for a few minutes. The colours here are vibrant (a little less than midway and upper/lower geyser basin) and the location next to the lake makes it a little different than the stuff on the west side of the park. I liked the contrast between this location and the others which helped make sense of the various geological influences in the park. Take the time to read the brochure and learn about why this site is the way that is it - so much to learn about!

Wow.. I was amazed at all of the different thermal sites held within this area of the shore of Yellowstone Lake. From cones, to pools to geysers. Take the 1/2 mile hike because there is something new to see at every turn. This was a great introduction as to what to see in the rest of the park.

This is one of the few designated places in the park to gas up, buy snacks, eat picnics and get off the sightseeing treadmill. Years ago this was just a gas station, but now there is a regular village with a campground. It is a nice place to walk down to the lake, have a picnic and chase the camp robbers away. I love the smell of pines in the sunshine.

With several different geyser stops in YSNP I liked this one. The walk was easy and we could see several different kinds of geysers and colors. It's not as big or as impressive as some of the others, but I really liked that the lake was in the back ground. It was worth the time to stop!

West Thumb Geyser Basin offers great views of Yellowstone Lake as well as many amazing geothermal features. Beautiful springs, geysers, fumaroles, bubbly things. Well worth the trip.

The West Thumb Geyser Basin is not as showy as some of the other geyser basins in the Park but it is a nice “leg-stretcher” walk and a good introduction to Yellowstone’s thermal features. Yellowstone Lake makes for a beautiful backdrop as you walk around this geyser basin. It is an easy stroll around the boardwalk and is not a major time commitment. The weather, time of day, and animals can make each visit here a new experience.

Coming in from the south entrance of Yellowstone, this is really the first geyser basin that you hit. It is small and contained compared to what you will see but the location, right along the lake, is lovely and they have a wonderful boardwalk that makes it easy to explore this area. We went 2x during our visit. We were amazed at the small thermal geysers right on or in the lake - boiling water within 1 foot of the cool lake - amazing. The second time we went was just after sunrise and the boardwalk was coated with ice - made for a very surreal experience. Nice variety of thermal features to whet your appetite for what you will see as you get further into the park.
