Visited this weekend and had a wonderful tour with a young lady who was very knowledgeable and fun to be around. Learned the history of the area as well as the grounds and the house.

This home also had an abundance of facts tied in with the history of the city. The tour began in the museum building on the property which held a wealth of information displayed in chronological order around the room. From the museum we walked to the house and gardens which were also quite interesting.

We had a guided tour with a very knowledgeable young lady. The "stranger room" was very intriguing to me. She pointed out that back then, if a woman was widowed, there were precious few options for her to make a living for her family. Taking in strangers (since there were no inns or hotels) was one viable source of income. That would be very scary today!

If you want to get a sense of how people lived, visit their homes. As you are being shown this house try to imagine what it would be like living there before the Civil War. Look closely at the gardens and imagine how their food was acquired, prepared, stored, etc. This is a simple structure yet there is a great deal to see here if you open your minds eye. I loved the house.
