This statue is best observed from the highway where you are not allowed to stop. The area around the statue is so very close that the statue cannot be truly seen but there is information there to read. The information in the visitor center is very good and talks about the other attractions in Huntsville as well, like the prison visitor center and museum and the area in downtown Huntsville that has several Sam Houston exhibits. Don't go in August as they are all outside and it is hot in Texas.

You will definitely see this statue from the highway. go to the next exit past statue and Turn right and go back to the visitors center and short walk to statue. It is very interesting

I took my kids to see the statue that we passed all the time up close. And let me tell you....WOW. It's amazing. The detail work is just awesome. You really have to see this first hand. Just a little warning; standing under it will make you feel real small (or at least it did for me!)

Massive welcoming site when entering Huntsville from the south and in a nice, natural setting. Wish they had one on the north side of Huntsville.

We finally stopped at the Sam Houston Statue. We've always just driven on past. The route off of the highway was kinda strange but after a few minutes we were there. There is a small gift shop and restrooms at the visitor center. The Big Sam statue itself is impressive in size, just like Texas. We snapped a few pics, made a friend and headed back up the road.I'm glad we stopped...don't know that we'll stop again on the next trip but glad we did this time.

It's hard to resist the huge 70-foot statue of this State's founder Sam Houston during that drive from Houston to Dallas up I-45. A quick stop-in to the Center yields much information about the Huntsville area, particularly its many prisons and notoriety for executions, from the extremely kind matrons operating the gift shop. Take your family photos with the giant Houston visage in the small amphitheatre on the walk to the statue's base. No charge.

You can see the statue from several miles away when traveling north from Houston, and while there are 'No Parking' signs all along the interstate, there are always several cars that apparently have exemptions from such things. Those who stop on the interstate miss the best parts of the park! There are several exhibits outside, as well as a nice visitors info/gift shop. Said to be the largest statue of an American hero in the country, Big Sam is a must see!

The statue of Sam Houston on I-45 just celebrated 20 years! It's definitely worth making a stop at the statue and visitor's center to see the statue up close and personal and to view photos of it's construction and installation. There's a small gift shop that is a fun place to see.

It was a nice break in our travels to stop and visit the statue. The visitor center was nice, had brochures of what to do in the area as well as a souvenir shop. The photo opportunities were nice too. We left with some nice and unique pictures.

It really is a neat statue for a great man in Texas History. You don't even have to stop if you don;t want to, it is right off of I-45 and you can see him clearly in both directions. But you can go see it up close and take pictures too.

This is so cool. The statue is "Ginormous" Great to just get off the road and stretch your legs and learn a little about Houston history. Don't forget to sign the guest book!!

Quite a pretentious statue. Had driven by it before but never stopped and visited. Our group was afforded a wine and cheese reception in the statue. FUN

We stopped here after seeing the 67-foot white statue off I-45. It's free to visit. The gift shop area is small and old, but cute and filled with lots of historical information. We learned a lot about the legacy Sam Houston left behind. Bathrooms are clean and well kept. Nice shaded path to walk down to get to the statue.

I can't say anything else. It's a huge statue. White color. I can't write 50 characters about this. Just a huge statue. You can see it from the highway

Physically, Sam Houston stood well over six feet tall. His accomplishments exceeded his stature, and this monument is of a fitting scale. True, you can see it from I-45, but you can't appreciate its size until you stand at its base.I enjoyed my visit, and got information on attractions, restaurants, etc. from the helpful people in the visitor center. This attraction is worth a stop.
