historic upshur museum

We happened to spot the sign for this museum while we were passing through Gilmer, Texas recently. The Museum is housed in the former Post Office building on the town's Courthouse Square. The museum offers considerable information about life in this East Texas County throughout the years.Their collections include Caddo and archaic period artifacts, documents and photographs from the first 150 years of European settlement in the area. I particularly found it interesting to note that two well known American singers, Don Henley and Johnny Mathis, were both born in Gilmer. The Museum is open from Tuesday - Saturday from 10:30 am - 4 pm.
