Large park and a well marked walking/driving tour of the old historic building. Green park with picnic facilities.

Beautiful buildings remain of the old fort, worth a stop. Dont forget to do the driving tour, and visit the cemetery at the end.

The woman in the information center for the fort was very informative. The 2 videos were very good and provided a lot of history. We went to the stockade but other than that not much to see.

Ft Stockton has done virtually nothing to improve its appearance and quality of city experience for travelers and residents alike. The city is located at a major crossroads of the East-West interstate I-10 and the North- South state highways to Big Bend and southeast New Mexico where oil & gas exploration has resulted in tremendous improvements to the roads. Ft Stockton has the potential to be a true oasis in the vast emptiness of West Texas. But instead seems content to be a third-rate town of disappointing restaurants, shabby motels, and dimly lit businesses. Where does all the money spent by travelers go in this town? It certainly isn't visible in terms of innovative civic projects or private investment (other than the new WalMart). At least we could expect to see better street lights on West Dickinson Blvd.!

Had only been to this West Texas town for high school sports. This trip was a revelation of so much history with the Buffalo Soldiers, Comanche Springs Pool, & the Annie Riggs Hotel & Museum. Take time to walk through it all & you too will be surprised how much you have missed just driving through on you way to wherever.

Very historic and you can just drive the tour if you are not interested in going inside. Check out the Grey Mule Saloon for wine tasting.

One of the very small old historic forts from the days of settlers moving west. It consists of about 4 buildings and the old parade ground. Was active after the civil war and manned primarily by the Buffalo Soldiers as was Fort Davis and Fort Stanton. Worth a short stop to look at and read about.

Historic Ft Stockton is a fort operated by the US Army from 1867-1886 when the various tribes of Native Americans no longer posed a threat to travelers and settlers. The predominant troops at the fort were regiments of buffalo soldiers. The site has 4 original buildings and a small museum with enthusiastic staff plus 2 videos about the history of the fort, It also has excellent photos from the 1880's since one of the officers was a photo buff who took lots of photos and sent the plates east for development. Anyone interested in Buffalo Soldier or frontier history would find it quite interesting. Well worth a stop if you are in the area.
