We live in an area of East Texas with several pick your own berry farms and small wineries. Highway 19 Produce and Berries has been in operation for about 5 years but just this Easter weekend, they opened for "Pick Your Own" strawberries and it was a real treat. I remember strawberries as a kid that were sweet, red all the way through and of course not all skunked up with pesticides. That's what makes this place special. It's a throwback to those strawberries I remember as a kid in the 60's.The beauty of this place is you can pick your own or they have some baskets already picked for those that don't want to or can't pick their own. We picked 9 pounds and they are delicious. You pay for however much you pick. They charge a little more for the pre-picked berries. The owners are really friendly. The day we were there they had a guy selling barbecue brisket fresh from his smoker that was set up there. They had tables set up in the shade and all the fixins including pinto beans, chips, pickles and mild or spicy barbecue sauce. Prices were good and the drinks were cold. There's not a better way to spend a sunny spring day in East Texas than pickin' berries, eatin' barbecue and visitin' with a bunch of friendly folks. With a short harvest season for strawberries, it would be best to call them or look them up on FaceBook for the latest information on picking conditions or if they're even open for pick your own. They also sell their other produce at the Athens Farmers Market which runs May through the summer. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Highway-19-produce-and-berries/370819002928788Check out the Highway 19 Produce and Berries.
