This museum is located on Sul Ross State University's campus and if I remember correctly, it was free. The museum is easy to find - toward the back of the campus. It is small but the exhibits were excellent, taking you from pre-historic times to modern times. Visual and audio presentations. I highly recommend visiting especially if you are headed down to Big Bend National Park. There was a special exhibit about the history of cowboy boots. My first reaction was...really? But it was very interesting and I learned some things!

The Museum of the Big Bend is located on the campus of Sul Ross University in Alpine. It's a good place to spend an interesting afternoon, chock full of relics of the early days of Big Bend's history. One of the most interesting (to me) exhibits recounts the story of a local legend -- the Murder Calf -- an unbranded calf that was claimed by two different ranches, which dispute led to a murder, a manhunt and a shoot-out. Subsequent to all of this commotion, the calf was grotesquely branded and left to fend for itself on the open range, no longer wanted by anyone. In later years, legend says it frequently appeared around the region as an immediate harbinger of tragedy. This is just one of the exhibits; there are so many more. It's well-worth spending an afternoon at this interesting museum. Their staff are quite willing to supplement the exhibits with many stories of their own.

Great museum. I have watched the MBB evolve over 40 years and this latest phase is unbelievable . From the old Alpine exhibits to tge replica of the window at Big Bend it fascinates. It us well worth the cost if admission in fact it is worth several times the cost as the cost of admission is free

The museum is small but provides a very good introduction regarding the region. Anyone visiting the area would be well served to take the time to go through the museum in order to fully appreciate the area. It is well organized, can be done in a relatively short time period, and gives good insights into what makes the area so special. This is our second visit to the region, and wish we had taken the time to explore the museum during our previous visit.

I have had the opportunity to visit this Museum on two occasions and came away mightily impressed in both instances. While not large, its a perfect place to start your journey off when heading to Big Bend National Park. Lots of information and great exhibits.

This museum had a lot of great information. It's enough to make it worth your while to stop in (and it's free). It's not too much that you need to plan a whole day for it, but plan for an hour or so to browse through and read.

We stopped here for about an hour on our way to Big Bend. The museum gives a very good overview of West Texas history. The exhibits and short videos are very interesting and informative. The admission is free. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Recommend a visit if you're in Alpine.

This is a nice little museum on the University property. It is well done and nicely laid out for a very fast and efficient review of the area, what you can see, what you can do and why the area is what it is.Thirty minutes to an hour is more than enough time for this venue.

Located on the Sul Ross campus, it's not large but has a wonderful exhibition of life in West Texas, along with some fantastic photography of the area and Big Bend. Very user-friendly with short videos that were really interesting. Spent a couple of hours there and thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

Good introduction to the history. Geography, etc. of the area. Check for current exhibits. We visited during a Remington exhibit last November which was very interesting.
