If you are doing family research in Virginia this is a good place to visit. The library and archives has books, documents, and more. The staff is very helpful and it is a beautiful place to do research. Their website has a list of items allowed in the library and they provide lockers on the first floor to lock your coat and valuables. FYI...The exhibit area is currently under renovation.

Excellent service. Look up items of interest in their electronic catalog, fill out document request forms (up to 5 items at a time) and present them to the librarian who returns with your requests in a few minutes. No dislikes, but I wish that I had been better prepared. The electronic catalog is available online, and I should have made my selections before arriving.

Amazing we love to visit civil war museums to get a feel for different regions and outlooks. A comprehensive outlook of the war and the area.

We live near Richmond and visit the museum at least 3 times a year. The permanent collection is a great view of the State History. You can easily spend the better part of a day. Check their website for special exhibits which are always fantastic.

this place had a very good Virginia history museum that is now closed temporarily for renovations (spring 2014). there is a library attached that remains open that is a great resource for people working on Virginia family history.

Very excellent presentation of history in Virginia. Very informative. Lots of Civil War information. And their gift show is really good.

Very interesting place, lots of very good exhibits here, and I think some changing ones as well. A very fine collection and spent more time here than I expected. A good afternoon

I can't get enough of VHS. The fixed exhibits tell it all from Virginia as a hot spot upon a cooling planet to drive in burger joints of the 20th century. Rotating exhibits serve to inform those things popular and not so popular but, like it or hate it is our history and that cannot be changed. There is a pithy platitude out there some where that "the past cannot be changed, but the future can be changed" or something like that. Go to VHS and see the past, then form the future one would want to see.

There is a History of Virginia exhibit that you could spend days going through and still not see it all. Very well done!

Really interesting displays about Virginia's story from pre-history to modernity. Especially interesting we're the pre-civil war and civil rights rooms. Not an appraisal of the confederacy which around this area is somewhat rare. On the whole well worth a detour and just next to the virginia fine arts museum

We learned a lot about Virginia's history by just spending around an hour. I would strongly recommend people with elementary kids to visit this place.

The VHS includes incredible collections of books, art, and artifacts, with displays well-organized and easy to view and understand. The exhibits are changed on a regular basis, so no two visits are the same. Wonderful way to spend a few hours in Richmond.

Outstanding exhibits and presentations - all very well laid out and displayed with easy to understand descriptions that also try to give the context behind the exhibits. This is a true Virginia-oriented museum which is awesome for amateur historians, political junkies (lots of Virginia politics and exhibits), and the genuinely new to Virginia. Building is kind of imposing, more like a government library type facade and it would definitely benefit from having a more inviting entrance. But once inside, the exhibits are well-chosen, well researched, and very well presented. Outstanding and knowledgeable staff provide great context and insights.
