I first came to Hanover Tavern because I discovered that my great-great grandfather was captured there in battle by the Yankees in 1862. I did not expect to find such a well preserved 1733 roadhouse, with a fine restaurant, bar and even an occasional theatre production. The menu ranges from burgers to imaginative gourmet, in a facility that has served Lord Cornwallis, George Washington, the Marquis de Lafayette, Patrick Henry and a covey of Yankee and Confederate generals. Hanover Tavern is a welcome alternative to the chain restaurants and fast food that dominate the area.

We were invited to a matinee to a see a one women play about Dr Ruth, how she left World War 2 German and her travels to end up in America. The part was played by Eileen DeSandre and after a short time watching her and listening to her accent I believed I was seeing Dr Ruth. The play was excellent and the included history lesson was chilling.

We had Easter Brunch with our son and family here. It was such a picturesque place. The food was really good and there was plenty of it. They were kind enough to let us fix a plate to take back to our daughter-in-law. She ended up staying home with a sick child.

Best Buttermilk Fried chicken in Virginia. Good yeast rolls, side dishes, and desserts. The audio tour recorders told us about the rich history of this historic home and theater.

Great place to watch a theater play in a cozy environment, in which one feels as if one is on the stage and great place to have dinner. Historic indeed!

My wife read about the tavern in a Virginia travel brochure on the way to Ashland where were staying. A search of the Internet told us the tavern was a playhouse along with being a restaurant. We called and got tickets for the play that night, "Cotton Patch Gospel". The play was excellent, fine music and great fun. We looked at the dining room which looked nice and talked to the lady at the information desk about coming for lunch on our return trip. She a gave us a menu and told us her favorites. Hope to stop on our way back home.

Hanover Tavern is our favorite local restaurant for both lunch and dinner. The food is excellent and the chefs take tremendous pride in their menu. Food is upscale, restaurant downstairs is intimate and romantic, and we always have wonderful experience. We highly recommend it to anyone passing through the area or any other locals who have never popped in.

The tavern did not look well cared for. Very disappointed. We had brunch there which was only okay and very pricey. Went back with friends for dinner. The dinner was okay, but the service was AWFUL and overpriced. Wouldl skip this one.

There is a permanent Civil War exhibit in place along with rotating exhibits. It's a terrific place to visit and understand its role in the history of Hanover County Court House. Hanover Tavern is doing a lot of outreach to schools, offering opportunities for students to learn about history from its exhibits and on loan and visiting collections.

I loved the small town feel and very good food. The Inn's history is very interesting.
