barboursville vineyards and historic ruins

Came here on a beautiful sunday to see the ruins and friends never had been there so we met them there. Great winery and if you ever get a chance to taste octagon it is a must ..can't get it now but the wines are good for virgina wines and the ruins are beautiful.

Very large place, with a great tasting room, and a restaurant adjoining. The way they do tastings is cool, where you go from station to station and do a couple of samples at each. They have a great wine variety, and the wines are pretty good. They also have cottages available to rent, and the historic ruins are a nice add to your trip.

The tasting at the winery was very nice. The gentleman serving explained everything and was very pleasant. The ruins and its history was well worth the trip even in the snow.

We have come here and have brought out of town guests several times, and have always enjoyed it. The wine tasting room can be pretty crowded as it is very popular, but they offer many more wines to taste than most other vineyards, and you can buy half glasses tastes of the premium specialty wines individually. Their wines are quite good - including the reds - and many are sold at more reasonable prices than the typical overpriced and under-delivered wines of the region. The restaurant is very good too. I recommend a lunch over a dinner, its the same menu but more affordable... and you don't have long drive home at night. The ruins of the old manor are fine to see but no great shakes, but the overall setting is very scenic.

I was looking for a winery near Charlottesville for a stop on a recent weekend getaway with my husband. Barboursville is a great stop. Their basic tasting fee is only $7.00, and we tasted 19 wines, which was a great value. We bought a bottle of their Reserve Chardonnay. My husband is a bit of a California wine snob, but even he thought this was a great winery experience, and the best we have seen on the East Coast.

Let me caveat this - I am not a wine snob and could not tell the difference between a $5 bottle of Rex Goliath and a $40 bottle of some fine wine from France. I enjoyed this place because to my unrefined pallete, I thought the wine was very good and at reasonable prices. I am used to the Loudoun Country vineyards where tastings are $5-10 for 6 or so wines and usually don't include the glass. In Loudoun the bottles will also range about $20-$25 for a white and $25-35 for reds. At Barboursville, the tastings were $7 which included the glass and over 20 wines. Bottles were also reasonable with many under $20. Some folks on here complained about the "station" approach which on busy weekends will generate some wait times. However, from a practical sense if you are going to offer 20 wines and still have high capacity/through-put this is an efficient system.Also - when you are tasting 20 wines a little wait time between different styles of wine is not the worst thing in the world.We also took the free tour offered which I would highly recommend.

My hubby and I had a day to spare, so one of our stops was here. Although we didn't take in the sites (because it was cold), we did do some wine tasting. The tasting bar and service was well worth the trip. I'm a Sauvignon Blanc drinker, but tried the Pinot Grigio and was pleasantly surprised.

My wife and I went on a romantic wine excursion of western Virginia in October last year. Needless to say the entire region is breathtaking and beautiful. The people are amazing and the food is delicious. We traveled to various wineries on that weekend and each one had something great whether it was the scenery, the wine itself, the wine tastings, the employees, or the grounds. However, only Barboursville had all the above and more. The place is beautiful, the location is majestic, the wine delectable, the tasting is informative/fun, and the staff makes you feel like you are an owner. After the winetasting we bought a bottle (of our now favorite wine) and asked the staff where we could drink it. To our surprise the staff encouraged us to take two wine glasses and explore the grounds while drinking our wine. We felt as if in a movie as we walked through a forest and beautiful landscaped scenery ultimately ending up at the steps of beautiful mansion ruin where we took pictures and finished our bottle. We could have stayed for hours exploring but unfortunately our flight departed that afternoon. Next time we are in the area this will be our first, second, and third winery we visit.

We so enjoyed Barboursville! Definitely go on the tour of the winery and visit the ruins of the Jeffersonian mansion on the property.

Wines are mature, meaning no overly trendy dressed up koolaid varieties. A wonderful destination. Nice grounds to walk through, including the house ruins. Take a picnic basked, purchase some wine and enjoy!

This was not our first trip to Barboursville winery, but the tasting room has changed since our last visit. Most wine tasting have a single server serve all of their wines. The Saturday we were at Barboursville there were 5 servers, each serving a few of their wines. This allowed the crowd to move through all of the wines quickly without waiting.The warm fireplace really added to cold January visit. We enjoy many of their wines and buy some from local distributors.

Barboursville has a large selection of wines to sample and many more for purchase. The small restaurant is by reservation only and was closed when we were there but the menu looked great. The ruins are in view of the tasting room and you can drive to a parking area and take a very short walk to go right up to the ruins. It is self guided and interesting to see but there is no tour or historical information available. The staff in the tasting room told us a little about the structure, otherwise we wouldn't have even know what was significant about it, so if you visit ask.

I had a lovely visit and tasting (that included somewhere around 17 wines). Bill is absolutely wonderful.My favorite wines were the Sauvignon Blanc Reserve and Nebiola.

My husband and I were greeted at the front door by a woman that opened the door and welcomed us to the winery. Our first stop was the restroom which was very clean and neat! We were then pointed in the direction of the desk where we paid for our wine tasting (2 complementary tastings courtesy of our bed and breakfast [Inn on Poplar Hill]). We were given 2 glasses that were ours to keep (used to consume our purchase later that night) and sent to the first of five tasting stations. All of the employees were very knowledgeable on the wines that we were sampling. They told usage history of the wine and let us know what each wine would pair nicely with. Crackers were available to cleanse our palate and water to rinse our glasses with or consume. At the end of our tasting, we were asked if we needed to taste anything again to help make decisions of wines we wanted to purchase. I browsed the gift area to purchase the type of pourer that was used during the pouring, while my husband sampled the olive oil that is available for purchase. We purchased six bottles of wine, one bottle of olive oil and an aerator/pourer/filter/re-corker. We had a wonderful experience. We were impressed with the knowledge of all the employees. We did not have time to experience the Ruins but will return to take a tour of them and the winery.
