You must spend a lot of time in this house if you love history. Outside the house is an architectural gem with mnay unique features. There's also a beautiful garden to explore. Inside, you're first treated to an introductory video on the house and the family. The women in this family were incredible and very strong. Then a docent shows you around the house. While our docent wasn't very knowledgeable about the history behind some of the collections, she was very very kind and because I was a history major, she gave me some free gifts because she knew I would appreciate them. I was also able to help out and explain some historical background. The house features the usual household items plus many costumes, china and other objects in a special gallery. I didn't have enough time to look around as much as I would like. I have to go back. They're badly in need of a climate control system and some UV ray blocking window shades.

The General William Hart House was built in 1767 and it is one of the grandest houses in Connecticut. General Hart’s home was typical of the residences of the well-to-do New England settlers. It contains many Georgian features and architectural influences more common to Williamsburg, Virginia, and even to Dutch Pennsylvania than to other New England houses. The U.S. Department of the Interior has listed the house on the National Register of Historic Places. It is one of only three houses in Old Saybrook to merit this distinction.
