We don't take this ferry to save time, we take it because we love it. $3 for a lovely little boat trip across the river while looking at Gillette Castle perched on the cliff above you, fabulous views. Were so lucky they did not close down. Hope it stays as a CT institution forever.

I use the ferry to cross my work van back and forth from Chester to Lyme and back again. This is a huge time and money saver for me!!! Also its simply just a beautiful trip each way, you drive on, sit in your car if you want and have a nice quiet trip across the river. Go up the hill to Gillette's castle and look at the 20 mile view of the CT river its beautiful. The crew on the ferry are always nice and pleasant. You can walk on, ride a bike, motorcycle, car but the limit for trucks and motorhomes is 5 Ton / 10,000 lbs. There is no height restrictions its only the ramp from land to the ferry rating that limits the weight. They don't weigh your rig or anything but you might be turned around and sent back if you show up with a 35' motorhome, an 18 wheeler or a tri axel dump truck. Its all good and a must do if your in the area. Us locals hate when it shuts down for the winter. Do it!!

This is the best deal in Conn. It's a 5-10 min ferry ride with a beautiful view of the Conn River and Gillette Castle for only $3 per car. When you get to the Hadlyme side, drive 2 miles up Rt 148 to the Hadlyme General Store -- a real New England general store -- for great sandwiches and pastries. The ferry only runs from April 1 to Nov 30.
