My hats off to Freinds of Raymond and Civil War Trust...thank you for preserving this site. Small but preserved pretty much intact and although markers are minimal-all are filled with great insight into what happened here. History buffs, as your driving toward Vicksburg on I-20 and your thinking "do I really want to go 18 miles out of my way to see the Raymond site?" The answer is yes, and when you do, take an extra couple of miutes to drive to the town sqquare and see the courthouse and churches which served as hospitals and the Confederate Graveyard.Well worth your time.

This field of battle during the American Civil War is consistently being saved, improved and enlarged by a group called friends of Raymond. The correct name is Raymond Military Park. The Battle of Raymond was fought on May 12, 1863, between a 3,000 man Confederate force commanded by Brigadier General John Gregg and the Union forces which were 12,000 strong, commanded by Major General James McPherson. This group was part those under the command of Major General Ulysses S. Grant. Despite being outnumbered, Gregg’s Confederate forces held their position along the banks of Fourteen mile Creek. This is the site of the Raymond Military Park. The battle lasted for four hours until forced to withdraw. Gen. Gregg marched his men back through Raymond, and from there to the Confederate fortifications at Jackson, Mississippi.
