If you like cigarette smoke, long waits, and hostile service, this is your place! We waited two hours to put in. The bus driver dumped our cooler. Our canoe was filled with water and EVERYONE was smoking. ALL of the employees, and every other boat on the river. When i reached out to management through their Facebook page, I was given a very hateful response, and my comment deleted.Nasty place, nasty clientele. Don't take young children.

We camped in an RV site for 5 days and had a great time. Lots of shade to relax in. The staff there is helpful in any way possible. We canoed one day from Kerr to JRO and fished using a jon boat from JRO to blunks one day. Both were great trips. The water is getting low this time of year 8-21-14 but we Never had to get out of either boat because we were stuck. If you are worried about a long wait print out a form from there web site and have it filled out before you get there. You will aviod a line and go straight inside to pay.We plan to go back there several times a year. I would be there every other weekend if time allowed. I would recomend calling ahead to reserve canoes if its a Holiday weekend.Thank you to all the staff at JRO

My wife and I and 4 kids decided to go on a float trip. We decided to use JRO because we had heard some good things about them. Yes, the check-in process was a little slow, but not unbearable. The River was great, plenty of areas that had gravel bars you could stop on, eat your lunch, and deep enough for the kids to swim and play in the water. It was a nice 4 hour float we took.

Over the past month, we have floated the James River from the Cox access to the JRO campgrounds near the Y bridge in Galena. This outfitter (JRO) has decent prices but the service is barely tolerable. First you have to register outside, go inside and pay, then come back and hand them a float slip. For both of the 11 mile floats, we had to wait nearly an hour for the bus to take us to the put-in location. Had I not chased down the bus driver on our first trip they would have left us standing there. This is a nice river to float peacefully and still have a good time with friends. Once the water level gets below 3FT there are a few (minimal) spots where the canoe drags the bottom. If you're looking for a party river, the Niangua would be a much better choice.

These outfitters are doing a pretty good job. If you go floating, stay clear of Hootentown. It is probably the worst area on earth. It has a good place to get the canoes/kayaks out, but the people who camp there are horrible. Lots of drinking and fights break out constantly. It is not family friendly, even if you are just trying to exit the river. It should be closed down or at least patrolled!
