My son decided to go down the almost sheer drop off sand dune by the lake, boy am I glad I didn't go with him! You better be in good physical shape if you decide to go down! BUT it was so much fun to watch all the people go down and then struggle to get back up, including my son! Such a beautiful place and what a wonderful day!

We took a snow shoeing tour with the visitors center in Empire. These take place every Saturday in winter at 1 pm (check the website for details). Met there at 1 pm, got a short explanation and the shoes and off we went. Ranger Matt took us to Treets farm and then for a hike, which ended on at Lake Michigan. Easy hike, fresh snow, good weather and interesting information during the hike.Did I say the walking tour and snow shoes are for free, the only thing you need to pay for is a day pass to the park.

So beautiful and breathtaking! The blue water of Lake Michigan stretches forever like you are looking over at the open ocean. It is contrasted with the pale color of the powdery sand dunes. It feels so surreal to see such magnificent nature's beauty and grandeur. It's so heavenly!

Whether you want to stop for just a few minutes to check out the dunes, or you want to stay and hang out all day at the beach, this is the perfect place for friends and family alike. The dunes are amazing to see and are a challenging climb. The beach is wonderful. If you enjoy nature, I'd recommend a visit to the dunes during any time of year, not only the summer because each season offers a unique experience.

Beautiful dunes with peace and tranquility! Great fishing on the Platte River in downtown Honor with salmon and steelhead runs!

We stayed in Traverse City overnight before heading over to Sleeping Bear Dunes for a few morning hikes. We stopped at the information center, and the ranger on duty gave us a few pointers as to which trails would interest us. His advice was definitely helpful. We did the Empire Bluff trail--a short climb to a top of a dune to have a view of the lake and the northern part of the park. We passed several people with snowshoes but didn't feel that we needed any. We did part of the Platte Plains trail as well. This one was less traveled, which made walking more difficult. We decided that next time we will try cross country skiing instead, as the skiers we saw seemed to have a more enjoyable time in the snow. Definitely recommend going here to enjoy exploring nature in the winter!

This was my highlight of my trip in Northern Michigan. I was amazed at the miles of sand there is at this National Lakeshore. Our priority was to climb the huge dune facing the parking lot. Once at the top there were even more dunes. Intrigued we decided to see if we could reach the beach. We had a bottle of water with us, so we were ready for our trek! It took us 3.5 miles round trip to do so. It was worth the trek! The lake was wild and its waves were fantastic! Throughout my trek through the dunes I found a lot of photo opportunities! There were two others stations where we could admire the dunes. One had a platform built near Lake Michigan. Nearby is a little "village" where old edifices could be admired, as well as the former rescue station. No wonder we stayed about 5 hours there!I can't see anyone not liking these surroundings, especially when the sun was shining brightly!

We took a trip up north for the first time after living in Michigan for about 10 years. Not sure why we waited so long. My family stayed at The Homestead Resort and had enjoyed their clean newly renovated -almost hotel like rooms. The trip up to the dunes started with all 9 of us, 4 adults and 5 kids walking up the first giant dune. After an hour of walking through the sand everyone had split up and started walking at our own pace, we were spread out over half a mile. By the second second hour some of the girls, ages 8 and 9 had reached the Michigan Lakeshore. But the slower ones were still going.....In summary, it's a long hike and you must be in shape or very determined to get the waters of Lake Michigan. Th scenery was amazing and the sand unlike any other that I have stepped in Hawaii or Caribbean. I recommend this trip to anyone and any age, it will not disappoint, just be ready to rest and relax afterwards...

Its definitely worth going to before you die. You need to pay for a national park pass unless you go on a free day. It has huge dunes (the biggest I've ever seen). Its definitely worth going to if you have the time and money to do so.

Must must visit place in Michigan! Great hike on the sand dunes and beautiful beach with the turquoise water..its just breathtaking! Climbing and going down the sand dunes is not as easy as it looked to us before ;-) Could watch the beautiful sunset from the beach! This is THE place you want to visit if you like to be outdoors and adventurous! Lot of nice look out spots for scenic views and all the little towns with very nice and homely restaurants and shops selling local artifacts. Lot of places to go beach cycling on a nice sunny day. This is the GREAT gateway in Michigan!

We are so lucky to have a treasure like the dunes in Michigan. Some day I will make it to the lake. It is a long long walk with small children, but a must see.

We've lived in Michigan for 3 years now, and have heard consistently great things about Sleeping Bear Dunes. While we've visited other dunes (Grand Sable in the UP, and Warren Dunes in southwest Michigan), our first time to Sleeping Bear Dunes was in the beginning of Nov 1. We were driving through the area, and stopped in to take a break and do the dune climb. It was sunny but brisk out (about mid to high 30s). We were dressed in layers, grabbed some water, parked our car, and hiked to the lake back in about 2.5 hours. It was a challenging, but fun hike. We were a good temperature once we got started. There were some really pretty views, esp near the high points where you could see both Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix. There was still some color in the trees which made the views particularly beautiful. I was shocked at how busy it was for that time of year (late fall) and for how rocky the beach was compared to the other Lake Michigan beaches I've been too. However, my understanding is that there are nice beach areas of the park, and we just didn't see them. I would go back if I was in the area, but in terms of multi-day camping trips, I'll stick with quieter dunes that are just as gorgeous, like Grand Sable Dunes at Pictured Rocks, since it's only a few hours further for us.

I can't say in words how beautiful this place is! I grew up visiting here every summer as a child and quickly fell in love! I am surprised how many people don't even know about it! If you like to be outdoors go there, if you aren't one for outdoors then you might not enjoy it as much. There are trails, kayaking, scenic drives, beautiful sunsets, beautiful beaches & so much more! The trails are great, there are so many different trails offering different parts of nature (dunes, parries, etc.) & beautiful views. I grew up visiting during the summer but as I got older I started making trips in the fall. Both seasons are beautiful in their own ways! I am sure that spring and winter would also be lovely times to visit! I could go on and on about how much I love it here but instead I encourage you to go and visit it yourself!

I almost don't want to rate it so high because I don't want it to get over crowded and over popular! Great beach! Loved it!
