Once you go here you will realize how hard the miners worked. Very informative. We had 4 kids with us ranging from 5 to 12 years old. They thought it was "cool" The 5 year old thought it was "neat". Definitely recommend it!

A must do, seriously! Absolutely amazing experience! Our tour guide, Chris, was the 6th generation in his family to be in the mine. He had so many stories that helped share the life of a miner. It was such an incredible experience! You won't be sorry!

This is great adventure. We took our 5 and 2 year old grandchildren and they enjoyed the ride. This was amazing to see and understand how the miners felt.

If you are looking for a destination in order to know more about the history of the miners in the anthracite region of northeastern Pennsylvania, this is the perfect place to go. There you will find a spot full of history and the staff is very polite and ready to answer all your questions and concerns about the life in the coal mines villages in the past century. You will receive a guided tour with a lot of information and the staff is very friendly too. I recommend this tour, is a part of the history in United States of America that you really need to know . The fee is only 10 dollars, but it is a good investment for all the information you receive.

Absolutely loved this tour. Tour guide Andy was amazing and very informative. I really cannot stress how much information he knew about this place! Answered any questions and put his own spin on the tour. I quickly got chills when he turned out the lights and the whole mine went pitch black. defiantly not for those claustrophobic. Guided tour lasted approx 1hr and cost around $10 per person. I would recommend a stop for anyone in the area!

It was a dark, rainy day at the lake so we thought why not go to visit a dark and wet place. I suggested the coal miners museum which was not well received by our guest and my husband but I dragged them there anyway. Well they were all pleasantly surprised! We felt the enthusiasm and true caring of the museum by the staff as soon as we walked in! The cost for the tour is 15 for adults children less and it is cash only. The tour is about an hour but there is so much to see in the museum you will spend more time after the tour. Wear something warm because the temperature in the mine is cool and it is damp. The tour gave us a greater appreciation for mine workers and how we get our energy. The tour was full of history and information. The staff and tour guide were excellent.

We went there on off season 11am tour. Just 5 of us in the tour. The tour itself was really interesting. We got a chance to ask question. And the tour guide was very helpful. It's a very good experience.

Some years back I visited a similar exhibition coal mine in Beckley, West Virginia, so I decided I would go and check this one out. This mine produced anthracite (hard) coal whereas the former was an oasis for bituminous (soft) coal, but that isn't the only difference. At the No. 9 Mine, when the train takes you some 1600 feet into the mine, you can get out of the cramped car and let your tour guide walk you through the mine to see various aspects of old-time coal mining. The mine shaft and muleway, especially, you have got to see to believe. If there are kids in your group, the guide will emphasize that school isn't as bad as what miners had to deal with back in the day. (Yeah, I'll second that.) When they say on their web page and brochure to wear a jacket, they mean it--but don't wear something you wouldn't want ruined. No matter how hot or cold it is outside, it stays around 54 degrees Fahrenheit year-round in the mine and water constantly drips through the ceiling. As of this visit, a combination ticket for the mine tour and the museum was a reasonable $10. The museum building is a little junky but contains some interesting pictures and displays. You can take as many photographs and videos as you want. The mine is off US 209 just a few miles from Jim Thorpe, a very popular tourist town in east-central Pennsylvania. There is no onsite eatery here, but yes, they have rest rooms. The mine's home town of Lansford has a few local places to do lunch or dinner if you like.

Decided to do this tour with family - we had a 10, 14, and 17yo. They were all entertained and it was bigger with more to see than I expected. The guide did a good job of pulling out kids to make various points, making it more interesting to them than the average historical tour. It was a bit preachy sometimes but probably needed to be. In spite of wearing hoodies, we were still a bit cold toward the end. Would recommend jeans and a hat too. Also remember they only take cash.

This place was truly amazing, definitely a highlight of our trip. It doesn't cost very much ($15/adult?? I think?) and was well worth it. It's fine for kids, but can be a bit unnerving riding a train deep into the moutain. It doesn't go down (in fact slightly up), but goes straight into the mountain. There are lower levels, but that's not part of the tour. My youngest (8) held my hand the whole time during the tour, as he was a bit nervous. Tour guide (Chris?) was excellent. His Grandfather worked in the mine and he had a lot of first-hand stories. After each story, he would turn to the kids and ask "so, would you rather work in the coal mine or do your homework?". It's incredible (and disturbing) to find out how these miners lived and worked. The mine tunnel itself is quite wide (30 ft?) and high (10 ft?) but it's hard not to feel a bit claustrophobic. Then you see the side pathways where the workers would crawl into! Too many things to write about in this review, go see for youself, you won't forgret it.

This is a great place to take the kids and learn about mining history. They have a great museum and a nine train ride to the mine's under Lansford where you take a great walking tour! Keep an eye out because during diffrent times they also have events like car shows, picnics and stuff at NO. 9!

It was an amazing experience, especially because my great grandpa worked there as a coal miner. I was there with my mom and dad visiting from Poland and the staff was so generous and kind and they gave us a private tour. I am thankful for the experience and the lump of shiny peacock coal. The mine is really interesting and unforgettable and tour is fascinating. Whole-hardheartedly recommend.

The family who run this attraction are very nice. We weren't not prepared for the train ride down into the mine and how closed in it was. We decided at the last minute to not take the tour because of some anxiety and claustrophobia issues, and the manager was very accommodating. The museum was great and the video was very educational and interesting.

This is a great tour for the family to see what a real underground coal mine looked like back in the day. It starts off on a train ride down into the mine and then it's a walking tour from there. Be sure to pack a light jacket as the temps are around 50, it is damp down there. Also wear proper footwear, leave the flip flops at home. There is a pavilion and picnic tables to eat lunch.

Coal mine tour was interesting. You see how coal is mined, and the conditions that the earlier miners worked under. Bring a coat as it's about 55 F and pretty drippy.
