the little white school house, birthplace of the republican party

It is a must stop. it doesn't take long and history is something else. and you can go up to the republican house restaurant -- a decent chinese restaurant.

This place was a bit of serendipity for us and we were lucky to have met a very interesting and competent guide passionate about local history. The Little White Schoolhouse built in 1853 is apparently considered the birthplace of the Republican Party. The interior of the schoolhouse consists of many important artifacts, old school furniture and one can find a lot of information about the antislavery movement and the Republican Party. The markers just outside the building provide a lot of detailed information. This is a recommended stop while in Ripon.

Recently 12 men were playing golf near Green Lake, WI and took the opportunity to go to Ripon (about 10 minutes away) to visit The Little White School House. We met with the head docent who was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of this place as well as the history of how we got to have the Republican and Democratic Parties. It was here that the Republican Party as we know it today was founded in 1854 when a small group of Ripon citizens met together to organize and fight against the spread of slavery. They called themselves Republicans and Lincoln was one of their first members. There are lots of interesting pictures and mementos at the school house. Worth a visit if you are nearby. Well, we went when closed, but it was interesting enough for us to walk there, just behind the hotel. I guess if you are history buff and interested in the Republican Party is worth detour. We were just there.

A small schoolhouse where The Republican Party was born. Nice displays and I can not say enough good things about the young man inside who explained the history of The Schoolhouse and the displays inside. He answered all of our questions and was a wonderful guide to the museum. The cost was only $2 and well worth it. Don't miss this place if you are visiting the area and enjoy history.

It's a small but well-furnished museum that tells the story of the founding of the Republican Party and the events that surrounded it. It is restored inside and out as a one-room school from the mid-19th century. That alone is worth a visit. Ripon in the 1850s was a hotbed of radical, rabble-rousing, abolitionism and civil disobedience against slavery. Visitors of all political stripes will find something to interest them here. One could see it all in an hour or less. If there is a fee, it's a very modest one.

Four of us showed up and were essentially given a private tour by an enthusiastic hostess. Lots of history surrounds Ripon and she did a great job on explaining the context.

This little museum is worth the stop, if you are a history buff or want to learn more about the founding of the Republican Party.
