fort winnebago surgeons quarters historic site

I'm a history buff, especially if it involves geography. This was an amazing place for me to visit. I'd learned about it in grade school and was so excited to be on the actual place where the drainages to the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River are only a mile and a half apart. This is where the history of Wisconsin began and the legacy of the interactions of the whites and natives are still relevant today. The Surgeon's Quarters is probably the oldest building in Wisconsin, built by one man, by hand in 1828. It became part of Fort Winnebago which is now completely gone. How this building survived is a wonder. Our very friendly and informative guide was great and I wish we had had the time to do the place justice. A visit to the Indian Agency House at the other end of what used to be Fort Winnebago is also recommended. Plan 2+ hrs to see both these homes.

This attraction teaches you about the early 1800's in Wisconsin history in Portage. Fort Winnebago was the midway point between Green Bay and Prairie du Chien during the days of fur trading. Our tour guide was very pleasant and taught us about the Surgeon's Quarters. They have some unique items we have not seen before at other Historic sites.

This site is actually located in Portage WI. We toured this along with the Historic Indian Agency House. They are not owned by the same organization though. Both sites do tie in together and complement each other. Rob, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the site and the city of Portage's history. This is a must stop for anyone in the area. The fort no longer stands but if the city sees the advantage of recreating the fort, what a boom to this area would be. I personal would love to see the fort rebuilt. My family toured Fort Laramie Historic Site, WY many years ago and I could see Fort Winnebago having the same feel. Its a shame they do not receive loads of tour buses or people coming to this area. The name of Portage alone is fascinating. If you are in the area, give this a try, you will not be disappointed.
