Allen Creek Gallery is the headquarters for well regarded potter Matthias James. His beautiful bowls, chillers and more are colored like the Grand Canyon at sunset . . . rich, deep and subtly complex. Those same pieces are also functional; a good friend said she bakes bread in the larger bowls, which results in a pretty table centerpiece and even a unique gift. The gallery features other area artists and mediums ranging from watercolors to textiles, jewelry to yard art. Do check out the backyard sculptures, and spend some time on the side deck that overlooks gurgling Allen Creek. The building itself is historic and charming, but do be aware that it's a small space and you will want to navigate slowly and carefully if you need a walker, cane or crutches. That's OK because there is so much to see. What really makes the experience complete is visiting with Matthias James, and his wife, Lisa, if she slows down enough to chat. They are willing to talk shop, art, Evansville, and more art!
