pinehurst course number 2

I think there are better courses for the money. #2 is a golf course that is one which bored me more than excited me. Thinking about the holes, it was difficult to remember one that really stuck out to me.

We fell In love with Pinehurst many years ago, and after 5 vacations, we decided to invest in our retirement home here. #2 is a very interesting course, full,of subtle quirks, and baffling green complexes. Park your ego in the airport on your way down, take a caddie, and enjoy the experience. The caddies are all excellent, some are absolute marvels. If you can get Keith Silva, you won't regret it. Bone up on Liverpool Football Club, and he will make your day a lot of fun!

Very good classic and historic golf course. Green complexes are very difficult and the putting very difficult. That said, playing this course is awesome . It can bring you to your knees if you don't bring your A game. The club house is very special. If you can experience this place do it. It is fairly pricey.

Played two rounds on Pinehurst #2 this past Thanksgiving weekend. Started out cold as Canada and with a chilling wind to boot. Multiple layers of fleece and a wool hat came in handy. Almost as bad as last year. Warmed up enough to not be uncomfortable by Sunday's round on #7.Learned to approach each turtle back green as either target practice with a lofty wedge or a relaxed punch and run, links style. Key is to think through the right angle and distance to the green and pin placement for your approach shot. Highest percentage shots were mostly from links style thinking. So many holes were disasters for others in the foursome because they could not hold the greens with the approach shots that worked back home. So many bunkers but thankfully everything hittable. Reminded that pine straw rarely makes for a good lie.One caddy great (the Welshman), one disinterested. Torched him.I see Trump has publicly flogged Pinehurst for the excessively brown course conditions at the 2014 US Open. Not good for the game he feels. He has a point. What I was surprised to see this weekend was the heavy use of green dye to differentiate the fairways and to frame the greens. Definitely not natural. Not a problem for Chambers Bay, which is hosting the 2015 US Open and overlooks Puget Sound. It was lush and green as Ireland when we played it last month. Although I'm sure the Donald will find something to complain about as he cannot own that lowly county-owned course.

I had an awesome outing with my company here! Since I only golf a few times a year, and am HORRIBLE, and it was a 3 day business trip with only one round of golf I went with a set of rental clubs that were probably 10 times better than my set. We had a caddy for our group who was very knowledgeable and fun!

I traveled to Pinehurst in October. It was a gift for my 40th birthday from my wife and she is regretting it every day, because I won't stop talking about it. From the moment you pull up to the clubhouse you know you are somewhere special. The old school train that is near the entrance the village is a great touch as well. After we arrived for our round on number 2, my father and I were met by our Caddie, Jeff. Jeff had a southern drawl and was a caddie at Pinehurst for 35 years. He unfortunately had to deal with two Yankees for the next five hours. If you play number 2, get a caddie. The greens are close to impossible to read and the caddies will show you the way. They will also tell you where you can miss shots. That information is invaluable. Also the cart path that your cart can never leave is awfully far from the fairways. You'll walk more in a cart than you would with a caddie.The course itself is fantastic. I remember how intimidating the first green looked when I was in the fairway. How was a golf ball ever going to stay on that green? It looked like the entire front was a hill that would never let a ball stay on it. I think it took me 3 holes to settle down and hit a golf shot. Standing on the 3rd green you get a spectacular view of the next three holes you will play as the green is pretty elevated. You can see most of 4, the green and fairway of 5 and the tee box of 6 is right next to you. If you putt out first on the 3rd green, be sure to take the extra moment to look at the panoramic views.My father and I had our Pinehurst moment on hole number 11 when he hit what appeared to be a good 4 iron that would run onto the green. Then it trickled left. Then it trickled left some more. It then gained momentum and rolled off the green. Right into a green-side bunker. The other twosome that was with our group had a women that hit a similar shot, but she didn't roll into the bunker. My father asked our caddie, "Why didn't her ball roll into the bunker?" He replied with his southern drawl, "Well, she isn't getting the full Pinehurst experience."I think 17 may have been my favorite hole. I nearly birdied it and had a tap in for par. I remember back in 99 Payne made birdie here to take the lead. I loved every hole, but this is the one I wanted to par more than any other. 18 is another great hole and be ready, you will most likely have an audience watching you putt out and probably placing wagers on whether someone from your group will do the "Payne Pose" after holing out at 18. I have played Cog Hill, Bethpage Black, Bulle Rock, Lighthouse Sound and the golf course on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. Number 2 is my favorite out of all of them. I liked everything about the course. You need to hit good irons and putt and chip well to survive. If your driver gets loose you can easily survive the rough, as long as you get a good lie. If you miss the wire grass, the lie can almost be as clean as the fairway.Good luck if you play, I highly recommend it.

I have played #2 a number of times so I can recall the course before the recent redesign. It is relatively flat as there are other courses in Pinehurst with more terrain changes. Trouble with driving will lead to a higher score as the putting is some of the most difficult you will ever find. Get a caddie and they can share highlights of the US Opens held there (I was at then as we'll including M Wie win). I find the first 9 holes and the last 4 the most interesting. Best bet. Play any other Pinehurst course in the morning and then #2 as your replay in the afternoon (yep - they have reload at a pretty good price). Use your savings and have a drink on the veranda and toast To your day of golf!

Wonderful course with recent restoration. Beautiful Donald Ross design. The new hybrid Bermuda grass greens will be even more brutal in time in the turtle-back greens. It's expensive, but a wonderful test of golf. Take a caddy and enjoy.

I played in a shotgun start tournament on Course #2, with Bobby as my caddie. The start of the round was well organized with golf carts available to deliver golfers to the correct starting hole. The course was very well manicured, with the revised hazards now consisitng of sandy gravel and wispy grass similar to the original design. The holes were challenging as I played each at white plus tee locations, but the holes were readily possible to par by keeping the golf ball centered in the fairway and approaches without needing very long disnce drives. There were not many water hazards on #2 and the main challenge was figuring out the breaks and speed on the putts. Bobby the caddy tried his best to predict the putting breaks however it is up to the golfer to do it smoothly and with enough speed to get it close to the hole.

What a treat to be able to play this Open course. Pricy and not for the faint of heart and I would recommend taking a looper to complete the experience (in for a penny, in for a pound). The course is not too intimidating from the tee but the real fun begins at the greens. Our caddie introduced us to a new term, GVR, Greens Visited in Regulation.The greens have recently been redone with a Ultradwarf Bermuda and are still a little soft. We did not find them particularly grainy (as they are new) so we needed to find another excuse for out missed putts.Is it worth the rack rate? I think that is a stretch but for a once in a long time (lifetime?) experience I would recommend tipping it here.

It was great to play right after the US Opens with tents and grandstands still up. Had a fantastic caddy who did a great job of reading the perfect greens. Great golf course.

This course is first class, but not at all attractive if you want green and plush. Great layout for walking and viewing the US Open, but best left for the serious golfer if planning to play it.

If you play golf, there are certain courses you simply must play. Pinehurst Number 2 is one of those courses. Expensive? Yes! But so are most things in life that appear on your Bucket List!

Although not nearly as manicured as some other famous courses, Pinehurst #2 made watching the US Open exciting. I was fortunate enough to have access to the Member's Clubhouse with patios overlooking the 1st tee and the 18th green. We also walked most of the rest of the course. If you are a golfer, you should put a trip to Pinehurst on your bucket list. If you get to go to Pinehurst to watch a tournament, you won't be disappointed.

Great tournament ran by the USGA; beautiful golf course; great hospitality. Great access to everything.
