This is a nice rock shop and has some great larger rocks outside the shop sold by weight. I gave this an 'very good' rating because while there is not a huge selection of stones, the stones and minerals they do have are really nice and decently priced.

This shop has a wonderful selection. The people there were very helpful and they answered all our questions. We will go back every time we go to the Black Hills.

All the rocks that the black hills have to offer and more! This shop has many polished rocks and rough rocks to choose from in all price ranges. They have a nice selection of necklaces and jewelry as well, again in all price ranges. The staff is very friendly and informative and were happy to answer all our questions. They do have an option to purchase a prepackaged pan for gold and agates . You buy the bag inside then are free to use the panning equipment outside the shop. They don't supply anything other and the original bag and equipment. So bring a bag and a towel with you if you choose to do this. Very much enjoyed the carved stone animals available for purchase.

We stopped at many, many rock shops in the area and this one was by far the best and most reasonable for prices. Save yourself the time and only stop at this one. Be assured that they are the best around. They rock. Pun intended.

My granddaughter and I like rocks, and here we had a heyday! After long searching through the vast and neatly displayed selection of rocks, the highlight for her was the chance to crack open her own geode. A close second great experience was panning in a slough for special rocks (the opportunity to pan for fossils is also available). There's a lot to enjoy here connected to rocks.

We have visited more than one rock shop in the Black Hills. This is our favorite one because of selection and prices. You can find rocks, minerals, an polished stones of all kinds here. The staff personnel are friendly and knowledgeable. Good place to visit.

Many gift shops around the area are overpriced and stocked with miscellaneous things- this was all things rocks and comparatively much less expensive- The kids got to pan for rocks or fossils, and we have a wide range of ages who all enjoyed doing it. Made their day!

Picked up several local rocks with cool markings. Reasonable prices. Got some jewelry for our girls too. We also recommend The Handbag Store just down the street.

This looked fun, unfortunately, it was not. We purchased 2 trips to the mine and our boys were told to choose a hard hat and head down and collect 20 items. We were not given anything to put the items in or any other instructions. The mine was basically a shed with a dirt floor with some rocks and shells sprinkled around on the floor. SO, we tried again, thought maybe the panning would be more fun. We dropped another $20 and bought the "gem stone" panning bags. We took the bags out to their panning area and dumped them into trays to wash. No instructions were provided and our questions were basically disregarded. After washing off our rocks we had to go in and ask for something to put them in. I am not sure what we ended up with as we were not provided with any way to identify the items. I felt like this was a waste of money.

We had an 11, 10 and a 5 yr old at the store with us. We did the small self guided Mine where the kids wore a helmet, used a flashlight and grabbed a bucket to pick out 20 rocks per kid. They had a blast! What a great way to pick up some cool polished rocks as a souvenir of the Black Hills. You could tell someone went to a LOT of trouble making this mine look cool and feel real. I actually picked up some copper inside the store that was reasonably priced. They also have screening for gems but we didn't do that. The bins of rocks out front are full of huge pieces of "rose quartz", etc etc. You won't be sorry for stopping!!!

Someday I will have something at my home in Sioux Falls made out of slate from Dakota Stone. This place has more than just the wire baskets of rock outside. They have this cool pile of big rocks that I love to look over along with samples of all the stone that you can get for siding, patio, walkways fireplaces, tables and more! Besides, it is the first rock shop when you come into Hill City from Rapid!

A little on the outskirts of town and a little disorganised. Things that rock is another rock shop down the road closer to town where things are a little more organised and correctly named. Prices were average and they were not too willing to talk about the area to active rockhounds. A bit of a dissapointment as usually shop owners don't see rockhounds as competition or a lost sale if they share some info. Now we know there are more shops further down the road when we go back this year we know where to stop in.

On a recent trek to buy garden rocks in Custer and Hill City, this was the best of three shops visited. This is a family operation, and they have been around for ages. Product knowledge is excellent. Great variety, competitive prices, both indoor and outdoor rock "bins". Best to visit when there is no snow on the outdoor displays. Expect to carry away many pounds or kilos of stones. Bottom line: go here first for rocks.

One thing the Black Hills of SD are known for is pretty rocks, that look the treat as souvenirs, gifts or a garden embellishment. We've been to many Black Hills rock shops, and we always seem to come back to this place. The kids loved it when they were little and still have fond memories as teens and adults. Prices are fair, selection is good, and it is just plain fun.
